I have several Lyman manuals listing IMR 4227 45-70 loads. I have this powder and Berry's 350 gr plated bullets and wish to produce 1200-1300 fps rounds. My question is in this caliber does IMR4227 display position sensitivity, incomplete combustion, or any other less than desirable behavior? Does using a dacron filler resolve any issues? Purpose is making a target load that can do double duty when used for hunting small white tail deer or hogs at 100 yards or less distance. Rifle is NEF single shot used by a 13 year old boy. Thank you.

I have Unique which will meet my needs, but I also have a large quantity of IMR 4227. I thought that because the 4227 is slower than Unique, it may be useful when increasing velocity higher than that obtained by 12 grains of Unique. I can find no information on 4227's usefulness. I'm giving a new NEF and 300 rds of ammo to a young cousin.

I’ve shot a lot of 4227 powder in both handguns and rifles. I’ve never had a problem with it in any load I’ve used. I’ve never had any misfires, delays, etc.

I’ve used unique with my NEF single shot and never tried any other. 100yds or less and the recoil is less than a 20 ga. Slug to me.
