View Full Version : Value of Ruger #1??

I inherited this custom Ruger #1 in .375 H&H when my dad passed. It was used in Africa, I believe. The original finish has been replaced with something more functional and the wood is upgraded.

I posted the rifle on another forum, indicating that I was not sure if I wanted to keep it or not. I have no use for it, and have three other single shot rifles; a Winchester 1885 high wall in .45-70, a Sharps rolling block in .50-90, and a baby Sharps in .22 LR.

Opinions on whether to keep it or sell it were split pretty evenly. However, I received an offer via PM of $2k for the rifle.

Is that a fair price? My father left me dozens of rifles, and I don't know when I would ever getting around to firing all of them. This rifle is cool, but not in a caliber I have a need for.

Looking for feedback. I don't need the money. I have plenty of safe space, but don't see me ever using this rifle.

If my Dad took it to Africa I would probably have to keep it, even if I never fired it. But if I really wanted to sell it, 2k sounds like a reasonable offer. Nice rifle.

What scope is on it? That may put it over the $2k price. Without a scope, $2k sounds reasonable.

If my dad took it to Africa, and I didn’t need the money, I would not sell it at all, even if never planned to shoot it.

Beautiful safe queen I would get out every so often and look at and tell stories.

Why don’t you shoot it, at least once?

Looks like a beautiful rifle, I would have to shoot it once, before I decided what to do with it. Good Luck Chris

I'd probably hold out for $2500 with that nice of a scope. As mentioned, you don't need the money so you can afford to wait for the right offer.

I paid $900 for a #1 with a Leupold 6-20 scope in minty condition 3 years ago. $2000 doesn't sound that far out of line. Mine was 22-250, a fairly common caliber, 375 ouch & ouch sends the price up some. It is an easy caliber to load cast to make it a plinker rifle. It'd make an awesome 100 yard prairie dog gun with cast boolits.

If it belonged to my dad, I would keep it.

Last month I saw a NIB No 1 in .35 Whelen sell for $2000, at a live auction. No scope, supposedly unfired.

As far as I know, Ruger isn't making No 1's anymore, so the prices will only go up for the ones out there.

IMO that's a fair price for the rifle alone. 375 is great cartridge with cast.

My father left me dozens of rifles,
If I were you, I'd keep it, until a time comes when you are more motivated to sell, then plan an auction and sell a bunch of them.

I wouldn't sell a darn thing.
Keep them.
Enjoy them.
Everytime I sold a firearm, I came to regret it.

Early #1 (1970 or 71), custom wood by a professional and an expensive scope - that's a $3000 package in today's market. Not to mention the 375 H&H is a classic, eminently useful cartridge

A second look shows that it also has a custom barrel.

That's an heirloom rifle you should think about keeping.

Keep that rifle the 375 H&H is versatile rifle and an excellent elk cartridge. Doesn’t matter how many he left you that is real awesome keeper of a rifle. 375 will shoot cast or the 235 grain Speer can be loaded down. That’s is real gem and $2500.00-3000.00 would be a much fairer price. That wood is first class.

Unless I needed the money, I wouldn't sell one of my #1's.

My brother said he has always wanted one, so I may just let him have it. I found a bunch of brass and bullets for it.
