Trying to get the peep dialed in (50 yds for load development) and I am finding the peep is down and very close to the barrel. So close the rifle's buckhorn rear sight occluding(sp?) the peep. Is my only option to remove the buckhorn? If so, drift it left to right standing behind the gun?
I am close to where I want to be and don't really want to futz with the front sight.

Thanks

Replace the existing buckhorn sight with a fold down, adjustable model.

I have always drifted sights in from the right and out from the left.

Some people say it doesn't matter, since most dovetails are cut with a milling machine; but in from the right, out from the left has always worked for me.

Pins on the other hand are situational. Most go in from the left and out from the right. Except H&R's.

Thats what works for my pre-64 and my post 64 Win 94's. When I put on the Williams peep I replaced the buckhorn with a dovetail blank

Just did it for a new Miroku/Winchester 1894 Sporter. As they said…….Oh, I had to install a higher front sight, too. Blank in the rear dovetail where the semi buckhorn was.

Here's a simple solution to making a dovetail slot filler.

(Any real gunsmith will usually have a scrounge box full of old longleaf rear barrel sights they've removed from various rifles, for a few $$)

A longleaf rear sight will take less that 30mins to make (hacksaw, file & cold blue).

Original Winchester 22G rear sights sell for over $150.00. The post 64's stamped ones are a lot less but they sell blanks to do this for around $5. https://www.midwayusa.com/product/1005883063/

FWIW, the re-cycled mongrel longleaf rear sight I used above cost me $2 from a gunsmith (I think it was taken off an old .22)

Thanks everyone for the most excellent information. The buck horn is off and eventually to be replaced with filler or home made filler as the pictures suggest.
