I was given some Cast-Coated 576gr , .458 'boolits' and cannot find load data.
I dummied up one to test in my 1885 HiWall and it chambers fine....but ---
looking through lots of my old and new load manuals no data for this big-boolit.

Been reloading 45/70s for 50years, but not anything in this weight.
Scanned the net, looked at Load Data and others.

Anyone help here?

Thanks

What bullet length ?
What barrel length?
What velocity range desired ?
What OAL [cartridge] when dummied ?

You’re pushing the practical length of a bullet for a 1:18 twist and would be likely better served with a 1:16 with that heavy of a bullet. Not knowing what your rifle is, but a Ruger #1 is a 1:20, Shiloh and Pedersoli are at 1:18. Optimally, for this heavy of a bullet, you’d be better served with a 1:16 in 45-90 or 110. On the plus side, I’m sure you’d be minute of deer at 100 yards

I started with 35 grs of blackhorn209 over a coronagraph looking for 1200FPS with a 515gr bullet, in my 45/70 Roller. You could start with 30 grs of blackhorn209 over a coronagraph and see ?? See what the powder gives you for speed per different lot numbers ?
With the lots I have on hand, it runs 38 - 41 grs to get 1200FPS for me.

28" barrel, Browning HiWall rifle; 1:20 twist; velocity not important, but lets say 1100fps, OAL is 2.65 'dummy round'.
Range shooting 100 yards.

I only shoot smokeless, and I know B209 is good stuff, but I prefer powders I already have....like H4198, H4895, RE15, 748, 3031.

1.393 bullet length
I know there is almost 1/2 empty space in case so positive something like 33gr of 5744 will fit. I was hoping someone here had loaded these on here.

I use 27 grs 5744 under A 515 gr bullet in my 45/70 bear gun. A plinking load with a 500 gr bullet, 12.5 grs unique in my 45/70.

That is a QuickLoad (https://www.neconos.com/quickload-ballistic-prediction-software/) shred-out to Excel for...
- 45-70 Gov't case
- 576gr cast bullet (.458 Cal), 1.4" in length
- 28" barrel
- Your several particular powders
- Your stated velocity regime (1,100fps)

Sorted in order of best fill/burn balance

I like IMR 4759 It is a single base propellant. Been using it for many years. Frank Barnes who wrote the book Cartridges of the World claims 4759 is the best smokeless powder for replacing black powder. I would start with 25 grs and keep watching your fired primers. 5744 is another good replacement for black powder. My Sharps 1874 likes 405grs with 28grs. Shoots clover leafs! My original Winchester Hi-Wall 45-70 likes 500gr bullets with 28grs of 4759. If you can't round up 4759 or 5477 try Reloader No.7 It also is a good bulky replacement for black powder.
