Which Lyman J type shell holder for 7.5x55mm Swiss in a vintage Lyman All American press?

Try a Lyman #6

You should be able to use a modern Lyman Chart to get the number… they kept the same numbers (with only a few minor changes) for both J type and the current X type.

Can you install the conversion unit? then use an RCBS or CH 4D or something that truly fits?

The All American press should have plenty of distance between the ram and turret bottom for all but the longest cartridge cases even with the adaptor installed. The only problem is you have to also change the priming assembly to a “Special-T”. You can buy the adaptor and both large and small primer parts for about $25-30 or so an be done, or you can spend the time and effort (and $$$) to find the J type shell holders you need for however many cartridges you want to load. I did the latter, but I don’t use my AA for all that many cartridges.

I use the CH4D shell holder adapter with my old Lyman All- American (wooden handle vintage) and simply prime off press ... I find this the easiest solution to priming .

CH4D may have the alternate priming system but I didn't ask when I bought my shell holder adapters ...
Priming with hand tool beats press priming Seven ways to Sunday .

Gary,
I normally prime off-press too (except when using the Dillon progressive, of course) so for personal use, priming mechanisms on various presses don’t enter into my eauations. However, when someone asks about shell holder adaptors, I’m usually cautious to mention priming so they don’t get into the process and discover a new problem.

You might try a .30-30 shellholder.
