View Full Version : #11 Percussion Caps in a Percussion Revolver

I just picked up a couple of percussion revolvers, .36 and .44.

I have lots of #11 caps but zero #10s. Any problems using #11s in the revolvers?

11’s are all I have ever had. I make 11’s with my cap maker. My revolvers like them. They all have Treso nipples.

11’s might be a little loose, they have a tendency to come loose on my Ruger Old Army. A little pinch helps. But My home made 11’s work well seem to fit a bit snugger.

Just a little pinch and go about your business. I have noticed that they do not hang tenaciously to the nipple after firing, like #10's sometimes do.

Earlier I had been looking at the cap maker. Is it worth the time it takes to make the caps and are there some advantages? I do get it, when caps are not available.

BTW thanks for the tip on Treso nipples for #11s. Going to order a set.

I have been making primer caps for many years.
I found that it is well worth getting your own primers cap maker and Prime All to activate the caps.
You go thru a lot more caps when you shoot revolvers.
So when caps are hard to find , or priced thru the roof , the benefit of being able to make your own caps gets even more well worth it.
Lately , I also have seen primer cap makers for #10 caps.and some Musket cap makers.

I have found my home made caps very reliable and maybe a bit hotter than commercial caps. Another thread described “swaging” (for lack of a better description)the cap thru a hole in steel plate ,to make ‘‘em more uniform on the outside. Played with that a bit and found using a slightly smaller punch gave a nice fit of the cap on my Old Army. The other punch resulted in a nicer fit on my rifle nipples than as made by the cap maker.
The down side of home made caps is they don’t work thru cappers and a fellow gets a fair bit of time involved making them.

"C:\Users\matt3\OneDrive\Desktop\Caps\capper.jpg" These cappers work great with home made caps. I make up a bunch of cap cups ahead of time so when i want to make them i can make them pretty fast. i can make 50 in 15 minutes and they are ready to use. Lags gave me some good pointers on making them, good guy. for around $70.00 dollars i have enough components to make caps for the rest of my life and probably 10 other peoples lives. I have made probably 300 caps and it cost maybe .10 cents if that.

I am the one who made what you call the Swedger for my home made caps.
I call it my Uniformer.
It highly improves the inside and outside diameters of the home made primers cups.
It involves just a little more time to make your caps.
But to me it is well worth it since the caps come out of the Tap O Cap so rough looking.
Plus , like it was said.
You can play with different size holes in the plate and the size of the punches for your inside diameter to fit your nipples better.
Pictures of my Uniformer are posted in the thread called " Cap Maker "

315282 These cappers work great with my home made caps. After i make the caps i give them a shot of hair spray. i think it makes them more water proof and they stick on the nipple better too.

The first thing I do with any bp revolver is replace the factory nipples with a TOW set. They are made correctly, which eliminates my cap jams. The TOW nipples are sized for #11s.

You can always pinch your #11s a bit to make them fit tight.

I think it’s worth the time and I recommend anyone who has a percussion pistol or rifle to buy the kit.

There are 13 posts about #11 caps. Are we talking Remington #11 or CCI/Winchester #11s?

The Rem #11 fits a much larger nipple. The Remington #10 is pretty close to a CCI/WW #11 as is the RWS 1075.

Thanks!

I didn't see the cap making supplies, only .22 ammo. What did I miss?

Makes sense. I ordered some treso nipples from Buffalo Arms and it was listed for use with #11 caps. Wasn't sure if that was a typo or not. Haven't had a chance to use them yet.
