Is there such a thing?

Not that I know of. The velocity of the 40sw doesn't warrant the use of them. I've never used them and have shot over 600 rounds of cb's through my Glock23. Even fired from a 40sw carbine the velocities will still be below the gas check threshold.

How about using them on that other .40 cal round- the 10mm? Velocities in a 10mm can be raised above the 1200-1400 fps level without too much effort.

I've never fired a 10mm and I dont know anyone who casts for that caliber. I guess not many do as the check is not readily available. In any case, I've fired 30cal rifle bullets between 1200-1400 fps with no leading using unsized boolits.

I do cast for the 10mm, and agree with Superior, that even with 155 grain bullets, leading can be avoided with proper sizing, lube and hardness.

I haven't tried in 130 grain stuff moving 1600-1700 fps though. I bet those would benefit from a gas check.

In the old days- call it late 1980's/ early '90's- many of us were shooting .38-40 GC bullets in our 10mm's to get heavy cast bullet capability. I still have some of those bullets around here, I think. There were not as many moulds available for the 10mm then as there are now.
Can't remember who made the checks. Seems they went away just like GC's for the .41 did.

.415 should be available, but maybe too big. What's your application?

My application is I have a Lyman .40-60 mould - 250 grain - that I can't seem to sell, so I was going to chuck it in the lathe and turn it down to make a lighter .40 cal mould. If I cut it to the driving bands, I can make it either ~145 grains or ~190 grains, but if I cut it to a lube groove and use a gas check to make up the diameter, I can make it weigh about 165 grains.

I use .416 checks for my 405 Win, but the bullets for it are only sized to .412. I have sized them down to .410 before I got the .412 die, and the larger checks worked fine. For a 40-60, I suspect that you need to size even smaller. You might give the .416 checks a try to see if they work, and maybe annealing would help.

I just placed an order for molds, sizing die and .416 gas checks. I'll post an update and let you know how it works out. I'm relying on the check rolling over further than normal to grab into the lead. I tried it with a lee 200 gr swc and a 45 gas check and it seemed to bite in pretty well. If it stays square to the boolit, II would think it would work okay.

If you don't see an update by mid march 09, send me a PM to remind me and I'll get on it.

I shoot plain-based Keith boolits from .41 and .44 Magnums at 1,350 fps with no problems. The .40 shouldn't be a problem with PB, either.

I just bought a Lee mould and a sizer die to make boolits for my little Star Firestar .40. I don't expect any issues with it sans GCs.

Stew

Gator makes a 40 caliber check that takes a 0.380" shank.

Or, a 416 check, taking a 0.3925" shank, can be squeezed down to fit, providing you have a good sizing die.

Most mast produced sizing dies won't be up the the task, however.

Sage words. I now have 997 gas checks in .416 that are useless to me unless I find a gun I want that can use them.

The combination of the .416 gas check and the lee 175 gr 10mm die just didn't pan out. I am glad to hear that gas checks aren't really needed at the velocities under consideration.

I was hoping the bullet would swage into the check, but it appears that .015" is a bit much to expect a flat seat.

Anyone want some .416 checks? $20 and shipping and they are yours for the asking.
