thats really neat. the people that were here before us sure did know how to craft everyday useful objects out of stone. they had excellent working knowledge of what rocks were good for what purposes.

Can you tell if the stone molds are made of soapstone or some other?

I used to live in Knoxville, and visited that museum a few times. It is well worth a side trip if in the area. The University of Tennessee in Knoxville also has a museum that shows artifacts from local native tribes (I almost said Indian).

I have read of the old folks using soapstone for molds. Seem I read about wood being used, can't remember what kind bit laurel comes to mind. Some of that generation could be rather resourceful.

I have one for my 20 bore fowler made of soap stone. It doesn't cast a perfect ball, but would kill a deer.

Clay pottery material could be used for bullet molds. A round ball could be used to make the cavity impression in the soft clay before it is fired.
