Dang it, they bought out Piggly Wiggly in Edisto,South Carolina
It was a store my Granddaughters loved to go when they were kids.
And after reading a old ad in Alaskan Sportsman magazine, there was a Piggly Wiggly in Ketchikan, Alaska back in 1951.

They used to be all over in the late 50s and into the 60s.
We have one here in East Texas and it's the first one I've seen since I was a kid.
I think they were the original 'super market' and the model for our modern generation grocery stores.
Before them it was pretty much what we'd recognize as our 'convenience' stores with a butcher/meat counter inside.

Keene, New Hampshire-based C&S Wholesale Grocers Inc. said Thursday that it has entered into a definitive agreement to acquire Piggly Wiggly Midwest in a deal expected to close at the end of the month, subject to regulatory approval and other customary closing conditions.

We had one just down the street when I was a kid. They still have a warehouse in Houston.

We used to go to that store every time we visited Edisto and I have very fond memories of it. Too bad.

We have one in town that has been owned by the same family for generations. It is not my main store, but it does get a lot of my business.

Piggly Wiggly was the first “Self-Service” grocery store. Sometime in the 1930s, IIRC.

Before them, you went into a store with a guy behind a counter and shelves behind the guy. You gave him your grocery list, he grabbed a cardboard box, set it on the counter, went back and forth from the shelves to the box until it was full of the stuff you ordered. He would then total up the price, and ask if you needed help getting the box to your car.

Some stores had a delivery truck and made house calls.

Now you grab a cart and fill it from the shelves yourself. And now the Next Big Thing is ordering on Line, paying by Credit Card, and driving up to the store and having them put bags in your car.

I guess Drone Deliveries are next. But it all started with Piggly Wiggly. Sad to see the brand merge and disappear.

A long-time friend had one where he lived in Ga., always referred to it as Pig-Wig. Like others have said, both my friend and the store are now gone.

"The Pig" is alive and well in South Carolina.

Just about every small town has one.

I was born in southern Illinois and lived there until the mid-1950s. Back then, in that area, all the 'supermarkets were the A&P Stores. When we moved to the northwest corner of the state, no A&Ps to be found but there were Piggly Wiggly stores in all the larger (10,000+ pop.) communities. It's been years and years since I've seen either in Illinois but noticed advertising for Piggly Wiggly store while in Kansas City a couple weeks ago.

One in red bay alabama.

Yep, and it's been there for more'n 50 yrs at least. My B-I-L was butcher for several years, and I had lots of kinfolk who worked there. There is a Big Star grocery store in Red Bay, but "the Pig" is the largest.
