Bought a Ohaus bullet mold for 250 grain Keith SWC .44 cal bullets.
Using range lead that was mostly 80%hard cast of an unknown hardness
And 20% jacked bullets.
My bullets average 263 grains.
I know the the percentage of lead in the mix has an effect of the weight.
So I cast a few pure lead bullets ,and they came out at 266 grains.
My question is..
Is this bullet mold something other than 250 grains.
Or is it just my lead mix that is causing the difference of advertised weight compared to actual weight of bullet?

Greetings,

Machining tolerances and variance in Lead alloy is what you are experiencing.

I 'think' the old Ohaus pistol moulds were based on 10:1 Lead:Tin alloy.

My Lyman manual says a bullet cast of pure Lead weighing 256 grains will weigh 245 with #2 alloy and 238 with LinoType.

You should be fine. Cull the bullets, size and load carefully, then test for groups.

Cheers,

Dave

Most likely, as mentioned, the alloy you're using isn't right for the weight. Sounds like too much lead.

Hows the diameter, as bullets drop from the mold? Undersize would mean a high percent of lead.

Want lighter & larger, add linotype.

I guess my range lead must be close to yours.
Thanks for the info .
Btw I load my 263 grain bullets over 16 grains of 2400 for 1160 fps. From 7 1/2” barrel.

Here is some pics I took of my bullet, with lube. If you want to sent me a couple samples of your bullet, I'll pic them together (might without lube of course).
