338-06 Testing Went Good

I am really enjoying Making Cast Bullets. Thanks to everyone, reading others post is also educating. Thought I would share some test pictures from this morning. I hope someone finds them interesting.

314181 1st lower shot in tote was sand only w/ no exit. 2nd shot Water Baggie then coffee then 12 pack diet soda box stuffed with water bags (24 inches of water) Through the backside and another 6 to 8 inches of sand. Recovered Bullet.

I had a 338-06 barrel placed on a Mauser action 20 years ago and just set it in a corner. Recently started casting again and got a mold for the 338 for the zombie apocalypse. I dont think its the gun I think its the bullets.

I installed a pre-fit barrel in .338-06 on a Savage a while back and it was amazing, particularly with cast.

The 35 Whelen in cast gets all the kudos but the .338-06 is very good as well. The 35 bore is noted for more mold choices while the .338” bore sports more j-word options. In cast the humble Lee mold (.338”, 225 gr) excels beyond expectations.

100% agree..Thanks for your comment. Do you Know how fast you are pushing your 225gr bullets? I too am using a Lee 2 Cav Mold 210gr though. Last wk I ordered a 205gr, 2 cav, Powder coating mold to fit my Magma Master caster. What I am shooting delivers nuts accurate but bullets take alot of work - filing, sorting weights, and lengths to have a consistent bullet depth to occupy consistent cartrige space, and still have consistent bullet jump to lands. I have a bit of a mental problem trying to get the max out of things. If your interested in some of these newer molds bullets I would be willing to send you some when the mold comes. You can PM me.

I did not chrono my lead loads. A member who has passed shared a load with me using IMR 4320 but at a level a little too robust for my not very broken in barrel and it leaded. I cleaned it out and reduced the powder charge, no other change. I fired a group at 100 and was rewarded with accuracy very close to what you are experiencing. This was pre-powder coat, lubed and sized .338”, cast air cooled WW with about 1% tin added and copper checked. Lee’s pride and joy.

My cases are once fired Remington 30-06, I may have bumped the neck diameter up to 8mm then a run through a 338-06 fl sizer but it might have been just the final FL die alone.

338-06 is a very fine and versatile cartridge indeed!

We have a 338-06 Mauser barrel sitting up north waiting to get mounted on a Mauser action.
Been shooting the 375-06 for years and decided to split the diameter with the .338. So you are encouraging us to not forget that barrel.
I have been years from ocean fishing... what fish is that ? Dad had a boat down along West Palm Beach.

375-06 Interesting do you shoot it slow enough to skip on gas checks? I think you will be impressed with the 338-06.
I did have a small set back with it today, I added a muzzle brake, need to go through accuracy tests again. WOW!! It is loud.

The 375-06 we shoot it from Bunny loads ( a 125 gr made for Ballards) up to a 345 fngc at 2200 fps. So yes we shoot PB and GC types. Also do the "Shake & Bake" powder coat. Works good on soft cast up to 1600 FPS.
I have been a 375 fan since our first Winchester in 38-55 many years back. Have all sorts of .375 rifles and a Dan wesson in .375 Supermag.
Got started into the .338 diameters with an 1886 TD in 33 Winchester about 20 years back. So ordered up a barrel for the Mauser Mark X we have had for many years in 30-06.
I was near a muzzle break rifle some years back and I was cured of ever wanting one. I would get a slip on butt pad if recoil was an issue an we do use them. Have a couple 50 Alaskan rifles and they are not bad at all with a soft pad on my bony little body.

Thanks Don. I agree on the 3 shot groups. I had many loads to test and wanted to keep it arround 30ish shots. (3 powder loads each with 3 differant seating depths the good ones all held tight so I was confident the pattern would hold. Today I confermed the load with a 5 shot group.

E.S. = 9.81
S.D. =4.47

Those are impressive groups. I have a friend who swears by the .338-06.
