View Full Version : Wrong 250 GR. hardcast for .45 ACP?

I had two .45 ACP aftermarket barrels throated for mag length. The problem is that neither
MBC 250 GR. Pinbusters or Hunters Supply 250 GR. can be loaded any longer than 1.240
and 1.235. Won't pass the plunk test. Underwood 255 GR. 45 super no problem. I even
pulled and reloaded the 255 to 1.275 in my brass (Winchester). It plunks no problem.
I do see the difference in the profiles with the Underwood tapering very fast from the case
mouth forward. Short of having the barrels rethroated the easiest solution as I see it would
be to use the same bullet as Underwood. Anyone know who their bullet vender is?

Thanks Ric

You could always seat your bullets just deep enough to plunk, and reduce your powder charge accordingly.
Post the bullet lengths and loaded lengths and the powder you're using and I can try it in quickload for an estimate.

That’s really the option you’re stuck with in my opinion. 1911s can be finicky on OAL and bullet profile.

Send your barrels to dougguy and never worry about that problem again.

Hi lar45
The MBC 250 GR. is 1.240 coal with a bullet length of .660 and the HS 250 GR. is 1.235 coal with a bullet length of .665. I plan on using 800x,longshot and power pistol.
Thanks for your help and to the other members that replied.

I have a 452460 Lyman mold 200 grain opened up on the end to about 248 grain. It's the same length as the 200 grain and seated to same length. It shoots higher than a 200 but groups great. I had to use a different slide stop to keep from rubbing the nose when inserting the mag

I have a misnumbered old NEI mould marked 228 but cast about 255 grain it feeds and shot great but haven’t used it in years. It is a little dirty but it is the best casting mound I have ever used. It is a four cavity and consider letting it go. Could send a few bullets if you are interested.

Who throated the barrels? I would be glad to take a look at them PROVIDED they are not hardened. I would like a couple of dummies with the various boolits set to your COA determined by the magazine.

800X is not in Quickload, but the other two were.
Simulated with a 5" barrel.
Remember this is not load data, just a guestimate to compare to other printed sources.
Hope this helps.

Thanks for the offer Bushrat but I think my problem is solved. I've located a company that has a bullet
that looks just like the Underwood 255. May even be the company that supplies Underwood.

An alternative is to find the old Lyman Auto Rim SWC bullet mould. A true revolver SWC design. The book shows 236 grain but my mould casts at 252 grains. I got it to function in my 1911 by increasing the length so the rotating band surface is about 1/8" out of the case mouth. It engages the lands but does a 100% function.
Here is a poor photo

I believe you are talking about the 452423. Not sure if Lyman still makes it but there have been numerous Group Buys for it in the past. NOE lists it and I imagine others have there versions.

Back a few years ago there was a fellow on line that sold used moulds, I found mine there for cheap, it had been out of production for several years at that time. I only had a few Ruger OM 45 Colts at the time, so when I just had the a few 1911, I figured out how to use the bullet for pin shoots. In the small Lyman book it is listed on the 45 Auto Rim page. My books are in my shop and it is raining.:-)
