I recently turned up a Lyman 457193 mold. It pours .458 and weighs 415 grs. If I use it in my Marlin 1895 it will have to be powder coated. That will make it around .460, that is what my rifle needs. There is no crimp groove and it looks like the bullet will need to be seated just over the front driving band. I usually use Unique and 2400 at Trapdoor level.

Has anyone had any experience with this bullet in a Marlin 1895 45-70, good or bad?

Thanks
Dave

If memory serves, that boolit was originally designed for the early Marlin lever actions in the late 1800's. It was of course loaded over a full case of BP and crimped above the top driving band, full case preventing setback in the magazine. I checked some rounds I have loaded with this boolit and the length is 2.6" seated and crimped at the upper edge of the top grease groove in a 2.095" case. I believe the official max length for the 1895 is 2.55", only .045" shorter than 2.6". I have not owned an 1895 for many years but it is possible you rifle may work with a 2.6" length. Only way to know is try it. Worse that could happen is having to disassemble the rifle to clear a jam. I know the 1894 Marlins can be modified to accept a slightly longer length than factory spec but don't know if this mod is possible on the 1895.

I bought it for the 1895G . I found it to be the most power level, alloy , and powder selection flexible bullet I have for the same . I have also a Rapine 458-201 255 gr , 462-420 MP @460-417 , and NOE version 458132 which is a single feed don't close the action if you can't pull the trigger 535 gr RN , and the RCBS 45-500 FP also designed for the 1895 at least in length that also tips in at 530-532 gr dressed . I forgot about the 405 gr RN Herters and a 385 RN Lyman . The 462-420 is a PB/HB , the HB is 380 gr . I had the Lee 405 HB also but it moved on pretty quickly. I also had a .453-350 RNFP Mountain that paper patched well .

My example seems to be a solid very consistent 3.5-4.0" 100 yd rifle .

It is what it is . I've had lots of 2.5" groups but efforts to reproduce them have been for not . Different day or something I guess .

4198 and H322 were too much of a good thing for my likes .
Unique provided good results from 454 lights to 1400 fps MV.
Although tempting I didn't try 4350 or 4831 like Ken Waters offered.

I found this mold and handles at an estate sale at a good price. Anyway I finally poured a handful, they were .458 and my rifle needs .460. Powder coated they ended up 415 grs. and .460. I haven't shot any yet but it feeds at 2.75, that's seated in the middle of the front band. I'm going to try them when I get a chance.

Thanks for the replies,
Dave

I haven't loaded Unique under 400 grain boolits but several of the guys I shoot gong matches with twice a month do. They are loading 14 grains give or take a few tenths depending on what their rifle likes. For 400's I load 24 grains of 2400 or 28 grains of 5744, both run about 1350. The 24/2400 load produced a 1.6" group at 200 yards recently from my 1886 Browning.

I like IMR3031, & IMR4198, under a 405gr REM JSP in the 95. I know it’s not a cast bullet, but these powders will work fine with cast bullets too.

I don't have a Marlin, but I works great in the Winchester.
