Lyman 450 Lube/Sizer Bottom Seal

Can someone with a Lyman 450 tell me what is used for a seal in the bottom of the press around the round metal piece that the threaded spindle goes through? Is it just a rubber o-ring or some kind of nylon seal? Thanks.

The seal plug o-ring is Lyman Paart No. 2990623.


It is 1 1/16 id and 1/16 thick.

FWIW I just cut a circle out of a cereal box to match the diameter of the recess in the base, Siliconed that to the bottom of the sizer, and then bolted the sizer down. Hasn't leaked any in over 20 years.

Mine doesn't have a seal and it's never leaked since the 1980's! Guess I've been lucky.

Thanks. I have replaced with an rubber o-ring but it keeps failing. Perhaps I will try the cereal box trick. Does the cereal box piece just act as a spacer between the sizer and the bench/heater?

Yes it just acts as a spacer. You could even make it the same size as the bottom of the lubesizer. I don't have a heater so I just bolt it down to the bench. If I did have a heater I would think about making it out of .005 brass shim stock so it wouldn't insulate the bottom of the lubesizer from the heater.

No seal needed. The head of the rod provides the seal . When you put pressure on the lube with the pressure nut at the top the head of the rod
seats into and seals the hole in the casing .

Back when I was rebuilding these, I found and ordered a square "O" ring for the base plug.

I have an older Lyman 450 that I returned to them due to leakage where the bottom piece kept coming out. They replaced the o-ring and re-staked it into the base, but about 2 months later it came out again. I cut a piece of 1/16" aluminium to match the shape of the base and put it between my mounting block and the sizer and when using the Lyman heater. Problem solved for about the last 25 years. May keep on working longer than I will.

Square o ring? Why square? The base takes a round o ring.

I have 6 -450's and the 0ring is different on a few. Maybe make a gasket for the bottom and bolt it flat. Some of the bottom plugs are a different size.

He is talking a round 0ring which is square on the sides and top. EBAY has them. It's maybe more of a gasket. 2990623 fits most. The 450 still need to be mounted on a flat surface to prevent a leak on the bottom.
