Re-bore to 45-70?

My 1886 Winchester 40-82 has a rough nasty looking bore. Has anyone had one re-bored and re-chambered to 45-70? If so who would you recommend?

Isn't the .40-82 made on the 2.4" case like the .45-90?

I don't know if that would make any difference in the action handling the .45-70 or not. I'd try cycling a dummy round first.

Otherwise, it sounds viable to me.

You might consider having it sleeved back to original, unless you really want a 45/70.

I'd sleeve it back to 40 82. I have one and it's an excellent shooter.

I would send it to JES OR Bobby Hoyt. They have both done excellent work on my rifles.

There is a 336 .30-30 with absolutely trashed bore in a shop near me. I'm going to see if I can get it cheap to become a .38-55.

Have you shot it? I have a 32-40 Stevens with a sewer pipe bore. With an oversized bullets, gas checked, black powder it will shoot about 1 MOA at 100 all day. I also have a Remington Hepburn in 45-70 about the same. I have no doubt I could hit a white tail at 200 plus yards in the ribs and kill it. I just don't see the rebore on those guns. Have an old ratty Win 94 with bad chamber in 30-30. It got a 32 Special rebored to 38-55. I have no regrets. Enjoy

Probably good advice to shoot it before getting radical. Agree have a Stevens Favorite.22 w nasty looking bore that shoots better than I can hold it.

Rockingkj, if it were me, i would load up some PC'd rounds (20-25rds.) and try it 1st., might be surprised, or sell it and pick up a 45-70
A 40-82 just sounds cool.

It’s still a work in progress. Bought it as a parts gun. All there but butt stock and fore end when I get that fixed and re-assembled will try and shoot it.

40-82 is a wonderful cartridge, loads easy, feeds like a dream, a little less recoil than a 45-70. It does use a 2.4" case, but 45 years ago I used 2.1" 45-70 cases, and 41 Mag pistol bullets!

Doesn't John Taylor reline them?

Yup you make 40-82WCF from 45-2.4. I built a Remington Roller in 40-82WCF and eventually found a Winchester 86 in the same. Winchester has a 30" octagon barrel. It has trouble cycling rounds from the magazine. The bore likes a .409 bullet I needed to neck turn some brass so cartridges would chamber. It's an interesting cartridge to play with.
