Here's a lightly used S&W 15-3 that I've had for about 20 years that I'm finally going to get to the range soon.

I plan to start feeding this revolver a large quantity of loads with various 158gr classic boolits.

I suspect OS OK may approve of this revolver.

Flower mound? I haven't been there in a couple years, but back then it was getting pretty crowded.
I'll be there ain't enough room to swing a cat now.

Anyway:
You need to get out there pretty soon.
Ya know, guns get 'lot rot' the same way cars do if you don't drive them.:bigsmyl2:

Beautiful revolver, TXTad. I don't know about OS OK, but I highly approve! A S&W Mod. 15 is just about the zenith of self defense revolvers. I just bought it's forerunner, a Militay & Police model from about 1948, close to new condition. To improve it you'd add adjustable sights and have a Mod. 15!

I've been here since I was 11 in 1978. I know it is well past time to get out. I'm working on it, but not in earnest. Once my son is out of high school in a few years, then I'll get gone for sure.

Yeah, I lived in Farmers Branch until I retired about 6 years ago.
It's all packed in like sardines in a can now too.

A life long friend lived there and he was always pointing out new apartment complexes being built.

My old LE service revolver from '74, a S&W M15 w/5" barrel. I've literally put thousands of rounds through it. Used it a few days ago to test the Lee Pistol Rest (with a couple mods I made to it). Put 18 rounds of old (probably as old as the revolver) Remington Target Master WCs in a 1.95" wide x3 .25" vertical group at 50 yards. She still shoots!

Beautiful revolver there, Sir. The M15 is my all time favorite S&W handgun. It’s just perfect in every way IMO.

I always like the 5" guns. Sadly, I only have two: a 1989 625 and a 28 that was converted to .44 Magnum. It came with a MagNaPorted 6" barrel. I didn't figure a .44 Mag really needed the ports, so I had it cut to 5". I only load light magnum loads for it.

Those are very nice! I need a friend like that!

I have a well used one that is similar. I always kick myself for not grabbing every cheap cop trade-in M&P that I could have for $180 or so back in the 90s and early 2000s. They just weren't interesting to me at the time, now I love them. I'm still avid about my 44s and 45s, but I've got a new appreciation for my .35s.

I also do not believe in preserving any of them in unfired condition, unless of course they are something like one that was presented to a president or something like that. Otherwise, if it's a tool in a box, it should at least occasionally get to go to the range. I have a 1958 Colt Official Police that seems to have never been fired as well as a 1977 66-1 that is essentially still NIB. Both are going to go to the range soon.

I've discussed the shoot vs preserve dilemma with some folks on some other forums and the general consensus is to shoot them because if you don't, the next person probably will. Why preserve it for someone you don't even know and may not like? In the case of my Colt, it might make $200 difference in the value. I did pay a bit more of a premium for the 66-1, but the difference in value is still not enough to dissuade me from shooting it. I am not going to wear out either of them, but they are going to get to at least go to the range occasionally.

Oh my, I bought a bunch of Model 15's back in the late 80's. Both the LAPD and The LASO traded in theirs on new Beretta 92's. Consequently, there were over 12,000 dumped on the market locally. You could buy them for 99-169 dollars, depending on condition. I made a deal on 6 mid condition guns for 119 each and gradually sold them off at 150.00 each. I ought to have kept one for myself, but I had magnumitis then and didn't need a lowly .38. We get old too soon and wise too late.

"I feel your pain". I bought model 15's from a place in Mississippi called Charles L Price Enterprises and they were LEO trade in. $140 plus free shipping for 3 or more. The good old days. Like Glen, I had to have magnums at that time also.

Truth is that I have two of them very much alike including the grips. First, SN # K8627xx is 1969. # 26K28xx is 1978-'79.

Can't argue at all that a 5" or 6" barrel is better for carrying around in the woods or hunting. But I've always gravitated toward the 4" for casual or concealed carry. Not to say that the longer barrels can't be carried concealed, as I knew a fellow once who carried his 6" Smith in a vertical shoulder holster when off duty. So did Dirty Harry with his .44 Mag. :D Thinking about it, I still have 2 1/2", 4" and 6" S&W Mod. 19s and two 4" Mod. 66s. All magnums, so they don't really count in this conversation. I have one 6" Mod. 14, and a 6" Taurus Mod. 96 which was purchased to provide cheap practice for the 14. The Mod. 19s are essentially a K-Frame with the ability to carry and shoot .357 mags., so I guess they could apply if loaded with .38s.

I see that you also like Colts. I've got a 4" Official Police, circa 1968-69, and a 6" Trooper Mk. III. Sold off some very nice Colts last year when I had to finance a new water well.

I also have a Trooper, circa about 1964 I believe. It's been fired extensively, but it's still in very good shape. It had the Colt target grips on it, which are just too blocky for human hands. I replaced them with a simple set of rubber Hogue's since the choices for it are limited.

I wish I could help you with this, but I bought them on e-bay about 35 years ago, and don't remember. Since then I've purchased other foreign made grips, mostly satisfactory, but poorly fitting in other cases. Now days Thailand seems to be making a lot of replacement grips. If the grips are unsatisfactory you have to return them to Thailand....and that's a big bother. I'd buy American if possible. Custom U.S. grips are usually expensive.

You're absolutely correct about the hassle of sending them back. I would rather bite the bullet and get it right the first time. I have a model 19 that is in need of some new stocks and I bought a pair of Herretts non custom targets off Gunbroker but the fit is nowhere as good as factory. It deserves better. That is a nice looking pair of grips!

I love all my old S&W revolvers, but I have never understood why they kept putting such horrible stocks on them. The small ones aren't enough, and the target stocks are just too darn blocky. Hogue rubber grips fit me very well, but their looks are simply not astounding and they're just not "nice" enough for some guns. Their wood ones are slightly different and don't fit me as well. VZ makes some nice ones right now, but they're a little expensive.

313068 The factory puts Hogue rubber grips on s lot of their newer guns and I agree, they are more comfortable but ugly aint the word. I put a pair of the new style on my 625-3 after I took the hogues off and thank heavens it is not a hard kicker. Every time I look at them, the term "they don't make 'em like they used to" comes to mind.313069 I left the Hogues on the 629 because I was using it in Alaska on the Kenai and your hands are wet a lot of the time. The are ugly but they give a better purchase on the gun when wet.
The old "coke" bottle stocks fit me better than anything but you can buy a used car for what they go for. I talked with Herretts and they said their Detective model stocks are very close to the old cokes.

I accidentally discovered these recently. I had purchased a used holster probably 15 or more years ago and then never looked at it until recently when I realized it's a very good holster. I bought another new one because they're very reasonably priced.

My other 15-3 is from closer to the end of the 15-3 production and seems to have a -4 cylinder with a gas ring. This one has has no gas ring on the cylinder, so I guess I'll find out if it really is susceptible to fouling.

It has a few handling marks, including a chip on the left stock, and came with no box, but it seems to have not been fired since it left the factory.

Sadly, no factory S&W grip works all that well for me. I love the classic looks, but not the function. I have switched the other 15-3 that started this thread to VZ grips after the Hogues started to separate at the glue line. VZ grips fit me very well, as do the Hogues. I think I have a set of lamo-camo Hogues somewhere that may go on this newer (to me) 15-3.

That is a very nice pair of revolvers!

I think I'll have to keep my eyes peeled for a 67. I have two 66-1s now, a 4" and a 6", so a 67 would fit right in.

Any particular reason for that?

I thought those factory issued smooth combat grips with finger grooves were the cat’s meow, and from the prices they’re bringing, apparently others do as well. Ultimately though, I discovered the Thai grips (via eBay) that look pretty similar but also cover the back strap.

The caveat is that I've never had a gun with the S&W finger grooved combat grips, and with the prices as they are now, I probably never will. For my hands, I like the grips that do not cover the backstrap. There used to be a Pachmayr that didn't, but I think they no longer make that particular model. I was hoping to get a set for a model 1970s 10 that I have to keep the period look.

Pure D hillbilly laziness in general. I do not worry about cleaning a Model 67 as much as I do the Model 15. A little dab of Bluemagic metal polish cream now and then is all I need for the 67, but I worry about the 15. Both shoot quite accurately with my cast boolits, and like most Smiths, over the years the triggers have honed themselves down to very nice trigger pulls.

Midway has a full selection of Pachmayr grips listed in stock. The professional model has the open backstrap, have them on my M15.

???? The grips on the revolver in your first picture appear to be the smooth finger groove combat grips of which I spoke. Do you still have them? Do they feel right in your hand? I’m so confused! :veryconfu

Excellent! Thank you for that info. I'll try them out.

I saw that there was the professional model, but literally nobody has decent photos, or descriptions, of Pachmayr grips on their websites any more. I feel like there used be a standalone Pachmayr website that used to describe all the details of the grips, including the open backstrap where applicable, but now that the grips are just an afterthought on the Lyman site, there's not details and no decent photos.

Dammit, that’s about are about the only K-frame I don’t have a copy of. I’ll have to fix that.

My brother lives in Flower Mound.

I’m in Benbrook, and it’s getting too crowded for me. If I weren’t near retirement, or could persuade the wife to downsize (ha!), I’d be outta here.

I didn't know how fond I am of my Model 15 until I started this thread. I have now added a second. I also never thought at all about the Model 67, but now I'm looking for one of those as well. I should have bought one back in the day when they were cheap, but that train left the station a long time ago.

I've always thought of myself as a .44 and .45 guy, but lately I've found a new love for .38s and .357s.

And you're right, it is much too crowded around here. As soon as my son is out of high school in a few years, I'm going to try to escape.

Here's one of mine, Tx...this M-67-1 has the Louisville KY Police shield on the left side...with a butter smooth DA trigger and Smith's usual superb SA, it's one of my favorites. I especially like the 'pencil' bbl. as opposed to the heavy one on my M-66. The grips, BTW, are Altamont's version of Roper Targets done in walnut. For moderate loads, I find they're very comfortable. I found this one in excellent condition in a small town pawn shop for $600 six months ago.

One of two "Best loads" to date is Lyman's 358091 WC, cast from ACWW's and sized to 0.358" with 3.5 gr of Bullseye. If I'm having a good 'eyes' day, it'll do less than 2" at 25 yds from a rested position. I've chrono'd this combination at 744 fps.

The other is Lyman's SWC 358156 GC, but without the GC, which does equally well with 4.0 gr of Bullseye at a chrono'd 846 fps. DA, from 12 yds with a modified Weaver Stance, I've kept many a cylinder full under 3/4"...a ragged hole. This is my favored load for its accuracy, smack and ease of loading with a speed loader.
Best regards, Rod

That was a good find for that price! I am definitely on the hunt for a 67 now, but I suspect I won't find that nice of a deal.

I've been loading up a bunch of commercial WCs lately, cast and plated, over only 3.0gr of Bullseye. Mostly to "get rid" of them since I've also acquired several different new to me WC molds from the swap forum here.

I should definitely try stepping it up a bit. I am confident that a WC at 846 fps will solve a lot more problems that some people with magnumitis might admit!

Rodfac, those Altamonts do look great on your slick little 67-1. Sorry for Louisville but glad for you.

TXTad, I’m in hearty agreement that a 38 wadcutter at about 850-900 fps is a great problem solver.

These old K-frames are as good as it gets for a revolver that can be both a tool and a toy. Sort of like the old farm dog that’s wagging with the kids in the backyard but turns to fangs when the uninvited show up.

In the speed-loaders are the Saeco-Redding 028 bullets, 147 grain RN designed for the 38 Super. It is a very accurate bullet. The charge was 3.0 grains of Promo.

I finally recently joined the 67 club with a 67-1 that I didn't realize was cut for moon clips until after I "won" the GunBroker auction. I haven't gotten any yet, but I think I'll give them a try. Meanwhile, it worked fine without them.

I also recently got another 15-3 that seems unfired, or nearly so, and a pretty nice no-dash 67 from the first year or two and has the stainless rear sight. No pictures yet...

My M67, and my M60. The M67 is my house gun and the M60 is my outdoors gun. Both fun to shoot, and the wife and daughter can handle the M67 easily.
