Don’t want to re-ignite the short starter debate. I use one and decided to make one a bit on the fancy side. Poured pewter end caps on a deer antler handle.

That makes ordinary starters look crude by comparison. Well done.

Thanks. Made some extras and donated to ML Club for auction fund raiser. Very well received there.

Looks great! Anyone would be proud to have a short starter like that in their pouch!

It’s a simple project and a fellow can get pretty creative with the design of the inlay. I found that fine details like a cross of Loraine can be done. However like casting a bullet, getting flow and fill can take some doing. Good thing antler is plentiful for the inevitable redo if the fill did not work. For those who have not done something like a poured pewter bolster on a knife I will describe the process. Carve/cut the inlay design, make a channel to fill the design just like a mold. Wrap cardboard around the outside of the handle, tape that tight around the handle leaving the top of the cardboard above the level you want the thickness of the cap to be. Not an exact science as the excess is filed or ground down as desired. After the pour has cooled remove the cardboard and dress down the pewter flush to the handle.

That looks much better than my plain jane version. Nice job.

Nice! The process sounds simple enough, but a video would be very interesting!

That's really nice.

Even pictures of the process would be nice.

If I make another one will try to take pictures of the steps but don’t hold you breath could be quite a while. In the interim those interested will have to “see” what I’m saying about how it done and try it from my description. Lol.
