Here is today's new acquisition to my shop. AMERICAN 3' x 9" Radial arm drill press. Has chuck and universal table. Gear head spindle speeds from 30 rpm to 1500 rpm 12" spindle travel, 60" height from bottom table to upper end, Power feed from .002-.020 per revolution #4 moarse taper. Congrats on the new purchase. Now comes the fun part of moving it and wiring it up to power.

Wow.

If I came home with something like that-
My Dad would have said, "That's too nice for you. Send it back".

Im waiting on the mill wrights to get back with me. I can run it from my existing rotary phase converter. Just run the wires. One control box bring power is and it sends it where it needs.

All the controls are on the other side. But I believe from my taller chairs it will be easier to operate.

At roughly 4000 pounds its to much for pinch bars and pipe. Loading it where it is they have a gantry Here it will be lift truck and then skates or air pads.

We got there today and talked a few minutes, looked around about 45 mins at the inventory and it was set down in the bay and wired up for the demonstration. The equipment they had on hand was mind boggling and this was one of three warehouses.

Only 4000 pounds? I can't count the number of times that myself and one other pipefitter moved a much heavier piece of equipment using only pinchbars and pipe rollers. Drop it within 1/8" of where it is supposed to be and pipe it up!

Very true and do-able.
It probably isn't much different than the method ancient people moved those giant stone blocks.

I used to work in a shop with a 1962 vintage 4’x12” Cincinnati; we used it to drill water channels in mold bases. Great machine.

the caterpillars have replaced the bars for heavy stuff, one at each corner and just push it where you want it.

The skates are good but if you have the floors the air cushions are even better.

i have moved heavy equipment on pipe and pinch bars. But here in my home shop I only have inexperienced help. So to be safe Im hiring it done

Don't envy the price of replacement bits. Drilled lots of 3/4 " holes and then countersinked in 3/4" AR plates. 4' x 10'. Then step broke ends to form a radius, they were bottom wear plates for ore cars.

Had bits up to 3 inches.

Piercing ears and noses

What ever I need a hole in in the shop.
My old gelding and lewis drill press is only half inch and no morse taper Only 4" spindle travel. It is 1 hp though. The bridgeort does have 5" spindle travel but is limited on opening and cranking the table up and down is a pain. This machine has forward and reverse, power feed, power up and down on the head, Gear head drive, 5 hp, 12" spindle travel. It has a #4 taper also. Its just a nice addition to the shop.

Don't pay any attention to me. I'm just drooling with envy. Nothing I have counts as a drill press, compared to your new machine... ;)

Does it get moved all in one piece? Good move hiring professionals for putting it in place!

Yes, a forklift will come off the truck pick it up and bring it in the building then set it on skates and roll it into position in the shop. Then either jacks or pinch bars to remove skates and lower it down. The arm will be at it lowest point to lower the center of gravity as much as possible.
Its a 4 man crew at first 1 operating the forklift and 2 spotters once on the skates one man on each corner.
When they brought in the original equipment 2 lathes a bridgeport and surface grinder they were 2 hours start to finish. These guys are good and have been working together long enough that they just know whats what.

Brian will come out a day or two before the move and plot it all out so there are no suprises.

Cute little radial drill. That area is where I grew up, my dad bought some stuff from Yoders. The shop I worked at in Swanton Ohio we probably had a dozen or more radial arm drills, that building is emptied of machinery now apparently. We made a lot of steering knuckles and radial arm drills are perfect for taper reaming the ball joint and steering component tapers.

Heres some better pics of the drill, and one of the first check of level no shimming or attempt to level had been done just how it sat down. The one pic shows the controls in the head better.

Well the electrician was out today, We ran the new drop and disconnect lock out box for the drill then things went down hill fast. 2 motors the rotation and up down can be rewired to 220v from the 440v no problem. The 5 hp spindle motor is 440v only. I have 2 options now 1) pull the motor a real job as it will open the gear box to do. and have it rewound to 240 volts. 2) buy a 240v to 440v transformer for it, with it the drill can be ran as is. Electrician is looking into the transformer now. Neither is going to be a cheap fix.
I also called the salesman as he told us that the motors were all dual voltage when we viewed it.
Im thinking the motor has been replaced at some point in the machines life. Since this is also a 2 speed motor.

Was a real disappointment today not getting it running.

I would pick the transformer option; probably the simplest and cheapest route.

FWIW, be real careful of anything you get from HGR, they have really went to pot since they sold out a couple years ago. I've be going there for over twenty years, and I have pretty much stopped, to much junk. Check with John Brand at McKean Machinery in Brookpark, he checks everything before he sells it.

Years back when I worked for a living, the gas turbine site had a squirrel take out a huge transformer. Replacement had to done in by crane barge. Used bars of soap to lube the base so they could get the new one in. Frank
