Lee 379-250-RF powder coated and IMR4895 in a new Winchester 1894 Sporter; 24” bbl ; 1:15 twist.

As you guys can tell, I’ve been worried about velocities, as all the data I’ve seen have been all over the place.

Loaded increments from the Lyman 4th Edition; 32.0, 32.5, 33.0, 33.5, and 34.0. I only made it to 32.5.

32.0 averaged 1694.8 fps and 32.5 averaged 1720.3 fps. I was shooting for 1400-1600. These were much higher than I imagined. Lyman #4 says min 31.0 is 1408 and max 35.0 is 1752, all from a 30” bbl.

I’ve never had to work DOWN! LOL. Didn’t shoot for accuracy. Trying to keep from hitting the chrony! I will say the sd was not good as lots of unburned powder left in barrel contributed to lots of variations in velocity. This was the only powder I had on hand to try.

I wonder if the faster twist with the 24” bbl had anything to do with the high velocities, and/or the polymer in the powder coat. Hmmmmm.

Not back to square 1, but definitely moving forward.

NOTES:

It’ important to note that SAFETY is our prime concern therefore we strongly recommend.

1. ALWAYS BEGIN LOADING AT THE RECOMMENDED MINIMUM “START” LOAD and develop loads in 2% increments towards the MAXIMUM load.

2. CAUTION: Beware of double charging if the loading density is below 50% of the available volume.

3. If possible, measure the velocity and correlate with our data.

Thanks! Part of my confusion right there. The Lyman #4 book is much different than most all those loads. RX7 is the only one still the same. Thanks for sharing.

Wow, ‘loads’ of info there! Thanks!

I have 2200, but don’t see any loadings for 250gr bullets.
I also have 2460.

Both of these powders, especially 2200, is right in line with some of the notable powders for 38-55. Faster burning than 4895, they should burn completely/cleanly too.

You are welcome. I bought one of the Cimarron 1894 rifles in 38-55 when they first came out. I slugged the bore and it was real close to .380 I bought a box of bullets from Vollmer Precision to fit the bore and used the TAC powder with decent results.

From all I have read 5744 and Buffalo are the same powder in different bottles . I have not had any of the shooters world powder to verify that But did read it on the website of the company that actually produces both, it is also sold under another name in Europe but I can't remember what it is.

The 5744 I have was made in Canada and the shooters world buffalo was made in Czechoslovakia. They both sure shoot the same. I begged for more 4759 and the Hodgon rep told me that Trail Boss took its place. ( HAHAHAHAHA yea right!)
