So I was high bidder on one of these. Looks like I found some brass from members here. I have an Ohaus mold that is labeled 40-170 SWC that dropped a bullet identical to Lyman’s 40188 at about .403 diameter and weighs 180 grains with my alloy. It shoots wonderful in my original 1873 Win 38/40. So that’s the bullet I plan on using.

Is there any historical load data published for this cartridge? thanks

I have a vintage Herters manual (C.1970) that has some loads using Unique, Bullseye, and 5066

Is it a booklet or Herters catalog? If booklet would you want to sell, if not can you scan the 401 loading data? Thanks so much. I have all those powders including 5066. Most likely I won’t be loading many 2400 and H110 loads anyway.

It is a complete reloading manual, quite a thick book actually, with lots of George-isms throughout...and it's not for sale, it's part of my Herters collection. I can email you photos of the two pages...PM me your email address.

One of my HS girlfriend's father had a .401 Herter Powermag. Nice looking gun. I don't remember shooting it. I loved looking through the Herter's catalogs...his stuff was the bestest in the whole world! and he was not shy about telling you so.

PM sent. Thanks. One has to smile when reading Goerge’s hype. It’s an era and he wasn’t alone. Maybe too much hype was a negative selling “his” revolvers but back then, there wasn’t instant feedback from the net these days.

Best writeup ever on the .401... Someone like Colt or Ruger needs to bring this round back...

Don’t see it happening with 41 magnum. And the fact that revolvers can be made that shoot 40S&W/10mm. It might be different if law enforcement used revolvers but revolvers are almost dead in LEO applications. The original concept that Colt was working on in the 193O’s was a modern replacement for 41 colt but the subject test revolver and its final sample only worked in the big new service, not the medium official police as intended. I really think Herters got it right with this cartridge but there were no L frame S&W at the time and colt abandoned its 1960’s .400 magnum project ( probably too busy with its M16 contract). I believe a couple of experimental python 41 magnums were produced but not enough safety margin in that config. I really believe most were tired of listening to George Herters over hype about everything he marketed that people didn’t give him second notice even though this cartridge/revolver combo looks like it could actually perform to his hype.

FWIW, Gordon Kahl ( posse comatatis?) was shot/killed by a mortally wounded LEO with a 41 magnum.

George L. Was a P T Barnum in his day but looking back over it many years later it’s amazing how much he said was true.

I hope you get the next page from the Herter's manual. He bad mouths the .41 mag.

Edit: ? Was your gun made in Germany? It seems they were imported from overseas.

Yes, made in Germany.
