View Full Version : Replacement for obsolete Remoil

So the formula for Remoil has changed so drastically that to call what they make today “Remoil” is false advertisement. I’m wondering if anybody knows of something that was similar to the version that had Teflon in it (purchased around 2015.)
*
The main thing I like about the old version is that the oil was so thin that one drop would spread out and cover the entire surface of whatever you just oiled.
*
The next thing I like about it is that I can coat an iron mold with it immediately after I finish casting, and then simply wipe the cavities with a q-tip dipped in isopropyl alcohol before I cast the next time.
*
I imagine Kroil will come up - is that stuff very thin?

I just use kroil for everything now. Yes very thin.

The reputation for the modern version of it is OK, but not great.
There are other things that work at least as well, but are cheaper and easier to find.

If you're worried about an oil having problems with the heat,
you might try getting a common squirt/spray bottle and putting synthetic 2-stroke oil in it.

Edit:
It's your deal, but how easy a mold is to clean for the next use is so far down on my list of priorities,
I don't even think about it.
I let them cool, then hose 'em off with spray can motorcycle chain oil.
It's slimy, gooey, and sticks like poop on a baby blanket.
To clean them- I use a tooth brush and a coffee can with a couple inches of gasoline it it.

Not having them rust is way more important to me than how easy they are to clean.

That crap was the absolute worst for me. Turns to gum, attracts dirt like a super magnet. Bird hunting in fields out of a layout is nasty business anyhow. I just use the Hornady dry lube anymore.

Nyoil is good stuff too! I like Kroil, and Marvel Mystery Oil also.

I’ve been using Barricade on my Muzzleloader. It is thin but dries on the surface. I have also used in on a blowback auto that I had been using Remoil. It is much cleaner using Barricade.

I've used Ed's Red for many years now, great stuff!!

I mix ATF and 0W-30 synthetic motor oil 50/50 for a general lubricant and preservative. Been doing that for 10 years or so and no complaints yet.
I bought a clear condiments bottle with a spout and cap somewhere and use it for an applicator. DON'T do that if you add acetone because it will eat the plastic.

I switched over to using Ed's Red several years ago, although I don't put in the lanolin. I also use the Ed's Red compatible oil which (IIRC) is just ATF and kerosene 50/50.

I keep mine in metal Zippo fluid cans ready for use. Larger quantities are stored in an old plastic gas can.

If a light oil with PTFE is what you are looking for, 3-In-1 and CRC have products that may be your huckleberry.

The experts maintaining sewing machines are hard over on TriFlow lubricant. They make a grease, too. You want to try the liquid.

Years ago, TriFlow was the "Go-To" gun lubricant. Haven't seen it in a gun shop in years, but my local hardware store keeps it. It IS good stuff.

There are sites on the web where a test of 40 or so lubes were tested for rust prevention. Hornady One Shot has tested near the top in all tests. As far as lube I like Kroil, Ed’s, ATF and Marvel.

ATF is our "go to" for many needs.

ATF is great and can be thinned with kerosene or mineral spirits.

ATF or Ed’s Red w/o the acetone for everyday lube, Wipe-out for copper fouling and Hornaday One Shot for rust protection. I used a lot of Tri-Flow years ago, and now can’t remember why I stopped.

Edited to add: Years ago I read that the original Remoil was nothing more than repackaged bulk mineral oil. Maybe true maybe not.

The thing about Kroil is if you get it in a can with a spout and you don't use it very quickly, you need to keep your can in an old cake pan.
When they say it is the oil that creeps, they ain't lying, it creeps right out of the can.

Hogue makes a very good grind to fit recoil pad.

So...... you oil your recoil pads? I don't get this.

Allow me cast a vote for Shooter's Choice FP-10 oil. Its not always easy to find but it really does work. Thin enough to move into tight spaces, dries well and really makes stubborn firearms work as they should. Been using it for over 10 years and have not had the first problem from it.

Ed's Red without acetone is my go-to for most except cleaning shotguns then I add acetone.

I used to use a dry bicycle lube on my mountain bike chains and shocks that had Teflon in it. It was good stuff. Can't find it anymore with Teflon. Teflon was probably removed due to environmental concerns. [emoji848]

A friend who's opinion I respect asked about gun oil. Recommened Quantum fishing reel lube, available in both oil and grease. They advertise 1/3 more distance casting over other lube's. Spendy, but was sure a fan. GW

Yeah, where did that come from? I got lost for a second there.
I use 3in1 oil, but not on recoil pads!

i have been using WD40 for decades as have many police armorers + gunsmiths - the gumming that many complain of is the result of users not flushing out the residual grease + grime completely when using it - lots of lab tests about it's properties to dispel the rumors -

Guess, as usual, I'm paddling against the current here, but I'm using the "new" Rem-Oil. Bought two large spray cans of it from Midway. I spray it onto gun cleaning patches and wipe it on where needed. So far it's doing what I want it to do--no rust observed. I does seem different than the original product--thinner.

Dupont chainsaver is a wax with teflon. I use it on all sorts of things, I really like the fact dirt doesn’t stick to it. It sets up in cold weather, though, so it doesn’t get used on guns.

Ballistol for all things hunting/fishing. Hoppes #9 for cleaning and sonic cleaner for small parts.
