Last week, a dad went to a public school (11 miles down the road) to pick up his child and (a GOOD policy) had to provide photo i.d. to ascertain he was on "the list" of OK people to pick up children after school. Un-zipping his jacket and reaching for his wallet to get driver license photo i.d., a janitor noted the clip of a knife on an outer jean pocket. He rang police! The entire school went into "shut-down" mode; police came; and he was escorted away -- now facing several charges for having a knife on school grounds! The news story did NOT mention the type/action of said knife, but I have a strong feeling that IF it was, say, a switchblade, gravity knife, or even an automatic -- that would have been also specified in news report.
I generally -- 99.0% of the time -- carry a small pocket knife. I have several, as a matter of fact, and my "grub" (most of the time) carry is an el cheapo Kershaw (~$35.00 USD) flipper -- with the outside clip clearly visible on my left trouser pocket!
Both hearing this story on local radio as well as reading in news, I had a rude awakening. To wit, how many times (in past) have I been in "knives prohibited" places without having given this a thought?
Hence -- I reckoned I'd share this story -- hoping a good member of this forum does not risk "getting busted" by just having a pocket knife in the wrong place! I have been in the habit of removing any/all "metal" before going into County Courthouse and similar -- they have metal detectors one needs pass thru -- but soooo many other places I'd not have given a thought to.

Just wait until 'THEY' find out that a simple pencil or ball point pen can be used as a lethal weapon! ...:bigsmyl2:

in my state pocket clips + belt case sheaths set a red flag - i carry victorinox in r/f pocket + Beretta in r/r ocket with clip removed - here anyone caught carrying with metal detector has it confiscated + depending on circumstance criminal charges are filed - visible open carry only allowed for civilians while hunting or fishing -

Even a sling shot is considered a weapon of mass destruction there . One of the reasons I moved to a free state six years ago. Anyway, I carry a Buck folding with no clip. Sitting in the pocket is just one less thing that can get snagged - both literally and figuratively.

glad my kids are grown, never thought too much about it. a pocket knife goes in my pocket along with the keys like clockwork. I used to keep a case trapper style until I got a boker automatic. I think its AUS steel stays real sharp very well.

I carry a kersaw lock blade with clip on my suspender strap. BEING in a wheel chair in a pocket is to hard to get to. It is used for normal duties in the shop and around the house.
In high school every boy and a big share of the girls carried a pocket knife daily. Again used in the shop for scribing and scoring.
Now what was is a general every day tool has become a crime to carry

I always carry a pocket knife along with spare change and my wallet and a watch. I know airports confiscate them and many public building, courtrooms etc. prohibit them.
I hate the 21st century.

you are very correct about slingshots but neglected that pea shooters + blowguns are also verboten - BB, air guns, repro black powder weapons, + any firearm that utilizes any commercially available cartridge no matter what the age . - can not move due to family obligations - but i digress, i remember long ago in grammar school teachers asking students to borrow their pocket knifes - thing change, but not always for the better -

My hospital visits we always remove are firearms, wife and I both, but I keep my pocket knives cause they are tools, not weapons. ( yes I can be asked to leave)
I can’t remove my arms and I believe they are weapons and can cause more harm when needed.
It’s all about false security and to project a feeling of safety to the sheeples of this society today.
The clueless walk around with blinders on !
I use to have a leatherman on my belt but when I retired I stop wearing it. I carry these two every day.
Spyderco combo blade and Ontario Rat. The rat is my butter knife or food knife, cardboard etc, and the spyderco is a working tool to cut anything needed. Serrated best for ropes, seat belts and ty wraps and other.
Keep your blade sharp n clean and stay safe.

A lot of it depends on the school district. You can expect that type of overreaction in many urban schools - but go out in the rural areas and the older kids will likely be carrying a pocket knife, plus the parents or teachers.

I carried a Schrade pocket knife from elementary school through high school, and never had any problems - but I graduated in the 1970’s…times have changed.

A couple of years ago, I visited a courthouse in East Texas for a brief time and forgot about carrying my pocket knife. The deputy just kept it at the check-in point then gave it back when we left. No drama, no problem.

It is amazing how people react to a tool. I carry a couple small pocket knives in a belt sheath at all times and have been doing so for over 25 years. Airports and government buildings, the sheath is left in the car, but my rural county and town offices don’t seem to care.

I miss the days when you could board a plane with a knife in each pocket (yes, 5 knives) and it wasn't even a concern of airport security.

Daily, I carry one knife on the left pocket for utility, and one on the right pocket that is for self-defense.

Back in the 90’s my youngest son was playing basketball at another rural school. In between games he had his Buck lock blade out peeling an orange. It just so happened that the school’s superintendent and our school’s superintendent (an old gun trading buddy of mine) walked past my son. The first guy asked our super if he allowed his students to carry knives. He said “Sure, and if they don’t have one I give them one”. My how times have changed.

I most always carry a small pocket knife. I like this one because it's personalized- it says "Old Timer" right on a small metal insert.

We have carried knives for our lives both of us being born in farm country.
Once a well known deputy (same one I had years before given a nice auto-knife to) advised me that in ILL-nois a clip attached knife was considered
a "concealed weapon".

Daily I carry a 4" fixed blade sheath knife, and don't even think about it. Seems like most everyone I know wears a knife and nobody thinks anything of it, of course then half of them are open carrying a pistol, so what's a knife? I don't have kids in school, don't go to schools, bars, or court rooms so I'm probably not going to have any problems.

Us old farts learned to carry and use a knife. Daily affair. Even now, retired at home. I'm lost if there isn't one in my pocket. I've lost one a d3cade or so ago at airport security line after 911. Wasn't in habit of removing it... it went in a trash bin, security didn't get it... maybe janitor did...

I miss the old days, had rifle teams and practice in school, in high school, either left the guns in the car, in school parking lot or put them in school locker, me and the buds were going hunting after school. There was no problem with any of this back then..

I always got an inside chuckle when I entered a government secured facility with 2 18" pipe wrenches, a 12 " crescent wrench and several screwdrivers. They would look at what I was carrying in my bucket and ask if I had a pocket knife. I never mentioned that I could do far more harm with the above tools than a 2 3/4" knife.

Twice last year I was stopped at the entrance to Silver Dollar City after walking through their metal detector. They wanted to see the contents of my pockets and back pack. The backpack had a couple of canned drinks. My left front pocket had my keyrings, about 15-20 keys on rings and a few links of roller chain. Right front pocket had 2 knives, a tiny Swiss army and a 3" folder, plus a 6' Stanly Fat Max tape measure. They said thank you and sent me on through. Another time, when I was carrying the same things, they waved me through without checking.

A Cross ball point pen carried in your shirt pocket makes a mighty fine weapon. The ones with chrome finish seems to be the sturdiest.

I used to carry a Leather-man and a small but very sharp pocket knife. The leather-man was used for most things, so I always had a sharp blade when needed. Not that I no longer carry the leather-man, I’m always abusing my knife blade and it is almost never as sharp as it should be.

Unfortunately, with the world we live in, we can’t take our children’s safety for granted. Metal detectors in schools are a good idea. However, there should be a sign stating what items are unauthorized. In Alaska all bars need to have a sign stating no guns or knives allowed.

Here in PA, the "other lawful purpose” clause is an affirmative defense. Self defense, cutting string, opening envelopes are all lawful purposes. You have to go to court, but you should win.

My mother grew up in the middle of New Hampshire,
in the "Roaring 20's" a hundred years ago.
She had a collection of hairpins.
She gave several to her granddaughter, my daughter,
with the instructions:
"These will help defend your virtue"

One that Mom usually carried in her hair
was a triangular file ground smooth to a point, small ivory handle.
Mom used it for an ice pick.

You would never know what hit you if you ever grabbed her.

A Gerber Armor Crewman" made of S30V steel. Blade is 3 7/8" and overall is 7/8" open. All steel is "blackened" along with the belt clip. Blade has an elongated hole for a easy thumb flick to open. Been with me for 7 years now.
Been carrying Gerbers whether in sheaths, pocket or clips for well over 40 years now.

I've hurt myself a couple of times in the past with a Cross mechanical pencil, I think that would be my go too!

Kids here can't have nail clippers at school.
