Cast Boolit(s) in 35 Remington for white tails

2022-2023 season is in the books.
That gives me plenty of time to work up a cast boolit load in the new to me 35 Remington.
Coated projies I have pretty well covered with the 180 grain SSP so I ONLY want to hear about BOOLITS/Loads.

I have Lar45's 180 RNFP GC, Ranch Dog's 190 RNFP GC and the Ranch Dog Group Buy 200 grain FP GC molds.
The 200s I have from a long ago casting session weigh 220 grains and are pretty hard.
Needless to say I am going to cast all three of these in 50:50 alloy for next seasons hunting.

All that to lead to my question to all of you out there using these boolits and especially in the 35 Remington.
Anyone using the 180-190 grain boolits for deer, if so any idea of the velocity you are getting
And
Now of course the same question for the 200 grain (plus) boolit?

Powder of choice will be 3031 because I have a lifetime supply!

Any and all input will be greatly appreciated.

I will be using some pistol boolit designs throughout the year to develop some plinking/practice ammo.
Asked here because this will be a HUNTING Load development.

As I get and test loading information, I will set up a thread in a more appropriate reloading area of the site!

I have not tried anything less than 200 for hunting in the 35 Rem or 35 Whelen. The Lee 358 200g FN GC bullet dropps about 210 and works great at about 1700 to 1900.

Great results with similar bullet. RCBS 35-200 lubed, checked 214 gr. 1850-1950 fps in a 358 win. With 50/50 + tin, Drops them well with great accuracy. -06

I used the Lee 35-200 cast out of. 94-3-3 alloy (weighed 204 grains with gas checks) Velocity was 1900 fps out of my 358 win. Used it to take 2 deer this year, they worked very well. Because they worked that well I am currently working up a load for a 1952 Marlin 336 35 rem. Preliminary findings have been about 1800 fps using 4198 powder ( not much 3031 left at my place) Any one of the bullets you mentioned with 50/50 alloy should work just fine on whitetails.

Been shooting a Marlin 336, chambered in 35 Rem for over 50 years. Put everything from 95gr to 260gr pills through it. Haven't killed with it for about nine years now. It has always shot better than me. Florida does not have big deer to challenge the RCBS 200gr but our hogs warrant the use. Your propellant choice is my favorite for hunting as well. Never tried powder coat. Abandoned the gas check at the insistence of my loading mentor. The 200gr is by far the most accurate slug for my rifle and is a bit much for a 130 lb Florida deer but the confidence factor is worth a little meat loss. The sweet spot for my combo hit right at 1650 fps. I will be interested to learn what you find with your rifle. My Marlin is a centenial 1971 model. A 320 lb hog is the biggest animal we have taken. Please keep us posted.

Killer several deer with 35 Rem and RCBS 200gr. I had'em going about 1750ish I was using 4198 (I think). Later worked up a 3031 load that was about the same speed, that was more accurate but haven't hunted with it yet.

Have used the Lee 200 with 33 grains of H-335 and its an accurate load. Have not killed anything with that particular load but have taken many animals with the .35 Rem and as another gentlemen stated it is more accurate than me.

My avatar is a 100 yard group with the load data written below it. It’s the hammer of Thor when taking archery ( broad side heart and lung shots) like I do. It’s my favorite cast boolit caliber and load. I have yet to try the load for accuracy in my 7600 carbine chambered in 35 Rem. It slugs the same .357 diameter as my 336 and chambers the same load perfectly. If I could just them to chamber in my 35 whelen pump!

Oh, the velocity averaged 2087 fps out of my 336 with 40 grains of varget. The boolit weight with 50/50 COWW and pure with 2% pewter added was around 198 grains. That was before PC and a hornady GC added.

35 Remington Pressure Tested Loads

Test rifle is a M91 Mauser rebarreled with a 26” Shilen sporter barrel with a 14” twist as sold prethreaded and 35 Remington short chambered for SR Mauser actions by Brownell's. I finish reamed the chamber with a chamber reamer I had made to minimum SAAMI specification and headspace was set at minimum. The M91 is still in cut down military stok. Sight are a Lyman SME receiver sight with an M14 front sight.

Pressure and velocity were tested with an Oehler M43 PBL. Cartridges were loaded with RCBS dies. The case mouths were mildly crimped in the canalure and crimp grooves on the rifles.

The SAAMI MAP for the 35 Remington is 33,500 psi in deference to the older recoil operated semi automatic rifles for which the cartridge was first developed. I many single shots, the marlin 336 lever actions and bolt actions the pressure can be raised increasing the efficiency of the 35 Remington considerably. The Marlin 336 while chambered in 35 Remington has been mostly chambered in 30-30. Thus with the M336 being made to handle the 30-30 SAAMI MAP of 42,000 psi I see no reason why 35 Remington cartridges can not be loaded to that level for the M336 Marlin lever action rifles.

I used 2 different loads for “reference ammunition”. The first was a specific lot of Federal factory PowerShok loaded with 200 gr RNSPs. The Federal technician wouldn't give the specific pressure tested data for that lot but advised it was just under the MPSM (35,500 psi) for the cartridge. The second was a Lyman max load listed using H4895 powder in their 50th Edition Manual which listed a psi of 32,400 psi. I replicated that load all except for the bullet. I did not have any Hornady 200 gr FTX but used 200 gr Remington CorLoks. The FTX is seated much deeper into the relative small 35 Remington case with Lyman showing it as a compressed load. The Remington bullet seates to the base of the neck leaving airspace between the powder and the bullet. Thus, I expected the psi of the “reference” test load to be a bit less than the listed Lyman load.

All tests are 10 shot tests. The M43 PBL converts the velocity to the muzzle [remember this is from a 26” barrel].

The use of LeveRevolution powder in the 35 Remington cartridge certainly boost the performance quite a bit. None of the reloads tested exceeded the SAAMI MAP for the 30-30 and, thus, they should be usable in Marlin 336 rifles, SS actions and bolt action rifles. chambered in 35 Remington.

I've shot 4 deer with my Marlin 336 in 35 Remington using Accurate mold 36-200A which weights 200 grains and has a large meplate of .25 diameter (the reason I selected that bullet). It feeds perfectly through my rifle when crimped in the crimp groove. I've used full power "jacketed" bullet loads as I want the full potential of the cartridge. My favorite was 38 grains of IMR 4320 but that powder is no longer available, so I've switched to H4895. Both loads get about 2,050 ft/sec. It kills deer with authority.

The 200 grain 358 Plain Base RCBS flat nose when powder coated will do 2,000 to 2,500 fps. The plain base 200 mould has been discontinued by RCBS but is still made by Saeco. I double powder coat them, size with case lube to actual groove diameter and push them to 2,500 fps with 3/10 inch accuracy at 100 using 1680 with my two ARs with the necked up 6.8 SPC round (358 MGP), very similar to a rimless 357 Herrett with 10 round mags. I use the same bullet in the 35 Whelen, 350 Rem Mag, 357 Super Mag, and the 357 Mag Marlin. Most any moderate load powder like 4895, 4198, H-335, 4064 with the PC bullet. You basically can load to a single digit standard deviation, normally a SD of 4-5 delivers good accuracy, sub 1/2 inch at 100 with an AR or bolt gun.
The hydraulic effect of the 200 at higher velocity is way plenty to drop deer and hogs in their tracks if shot right behind the shoulder.

I use the Ranch Dog 359-190-FNGC out of my .357 Max at a shade over 2000 fps with AA1680 for Iowa's late muzzleloader season when they also let us use pistols. I have yet to catch one in an Iowa whitetail yet, but every deer I've hit with one has gone into my freezer, shots ranging from 10 yards to just under 200 yards. I cast an air-cooled Lyman #2 approximation for hunting loads. I'm working up loads for this bullet with my .350 Rem Mag XP100 also. If I can get them to shoot well at 2200-2300 fps I won't be scared to shoot deer with them. They will be a dandy bullet out of your .35 Remington.

I can't speak for it's effect on deer, but the 35 Rem. in a CVA single shot has been quite effective on several pigs for me. Sizes from 50 to 250 lbs. I use the Lee 200 gr. RCBS clone, gas checked and using 36-38 gr of H335.I get about an inch diameter entry hole and 2 inch diameter exit on the larger ones. It's a hammer.

The only cast bullets that I have used on deer is the 35-200 RCBS and the second was Lee's version of it.
First was around a 100 yds. give or take a few, that was over 24.5 grs. of IMR4198, from my 1960's Marlin.
The second was right at 75 yds. with the Lee over 34.0 grs. of 3031 in my mid 70's chopped Marlin.
The first only made a couple steps and fell over,the second ran down hill probably 75 yds., but Ray Charles could of tracked that one.
The 3031 load shoots tighter groups at 75 yds. with both rifles, and is now my perfered load.

As well as .35 Remington does on deer a heavy blunt nosed straight lead paper patched .36 caliber in a muzzleloader should work wonders except for the regulations in various states.
