Last Aug. Mrs. Winger fell and scrambled up her knee and wrist
while trying to harvest one of those red velvet ant/wasp bugs we have here.

She's making much progress with the recovery.
Today, she got up out of a chair and walked across the room without any assistance at all.
For distances over about 30 feet, she still has to have one of those canes with four feet on it.

At the therapy re-hab place they had her using a three pound ankle weight to get motion back into the knee.
They said it'd be a good idea to get one and use at home too.
But she didn't want to spend money on something she's use a little, then be out of it.

So I fired up the bad boy commercial sewing machine and made one from blue jean material.
As a kid, I remember them being made with Lead cylinders in pouches going around them.
The new ones now have sand.

I don't really have any clean sand,,,, so I figured I'd just use some of the 1/2 pound ingots from my old Lee mold.
OH no,,,,, she ain't having Lead in them. This was not open to discussion or facts.
So I used rocks from the flower bed. That worked until it didn't.
They had lumps and bumps that hurt.

So, I looked for something else that wasn't sand, rocks, or had exposed Lead-
even if it was wrapped in tape, and would fit inside the cloth pouches.

Then a light came on!
Years ago, Mr. Bartlett had pulled down LC match .30-06 cases and match FMJ bullets pretty cheap.
Out of the thousand or so I got back then, I still had a bunch left after the M1 Garand went to another happy home.

Well, I asked her if a leg weight with Copper and Brass--- just like our water pipes was OK.
Yep, exactly three pounds of loaded match .30-06 FMJ ammo fit the bill perfectly.

Now she's on the road to recovery with a genuine red neck ankle weight.:bigsmyl2:

Just don't try to wear it through any metal detectors, they may not appreciate your genuine redneck ingenuity. :kidding:

Maybe if this happens to others, consider powder coating your reject cast bullets. I know most of us would have just used the bullets and not been concerned other wise. But ya gotta keep momma happy.

Consider PCing the lead ingots. Maybe then they’d be acceptable.

Chunks of rebar?

That would work.
But I have a lot more .30-06s than I do rebar, and didn't have to cut them.

Heck I was thinking it was going to be a kitten, although the attaching points can get a bit (okay a lot) painful.

I remember making ankle weights for my teenage son, also starting with denim cut from a pair of jeans.

The school (in California, where else?) was “concerned” when they found that they were made of lead, and, more specifically, lead bullets. It eventually turned into a “don’t ask, don’t tell situation, but still.

Good on ya!

Little plastic shelf holders busted in the fridge, now there's 4 .40 caliber shells with a larger flash hole and the original screw from the plastic pieces that broke holding it up.

And here I was thinking you were going to say somebody was on house arrest in two counties, with a bracelet for each leg.. :bigsmyl2:
