I have seen and tried to use several of the alloy calculators that are available, and have been having success , getting my cast boolits at the BHN that is appropriate, for its application. Usually involves ciphering thru %s or different units of measurement for a particular type of alloy.
It dawned on me, that maybe there is a simpler way? Maybe that’s wishful thinking… IDK, that’s why I’m asking….
Is there any kind of scientific, or mathematical formula, or ratio sentence that could just work with an alloy’s tested BHN number?
For example: If I have 8 ounces, of Alloy L ( unknown actual pb/sn/sb content ) that tests to 18 BHN, how many ounces of Alloy P ( unknown actual pb/sn/sb content ) that tests to 8 BHN, would I need to create Alloy M that tests to 12 BHN ?
Sure would be nice to try to plot that kind of data on an X / Y kind of chart, for plug and play BHN numbers. I wonder if it would plot a straight line or a curve….
I do not have a college education, but I’m trying to reason it out, and I find myself trying to write formulas, like this….
8 ( ozs ) x 18 ( BHN ) = 144
144 / 8 (BHN ) = 18 ( ozs ) ?
So…. Would 8ozs of 18 BHN + 18 ozs of 8 BHN = 26 ozs of 12 BHN?
No that can’t be right, how would the formula know, you’re looking for 12 BHN….?
8 ( ozs ) x 18 ( BHN ) = 144
144/ 12 ( desired BHN ) = 12 ( ozs ) ?
So … would 8 ozs of 18 BHN + 12 ozs of 8 BHN = 20 ozs of 12 BHN ?
I think no again, as how would formula know you’re adding 8 BHN alloy.
