I bought a junker T/C Scout .50 cal rifle this past summer and had Bob Hoyt change the barrel configuration from the standard 1/48 twist to a .54 cal 1/36. The barrel was dark and slightly pitted when I started out, which motivated me to make the change. As per usual, Bob did a stellar job of taking an OK .50 cal 1/48 universal shooter (round ball and/or conical) to a better conical shooter in .54 cal. I have a preference for the original design "Maxi-Ball" boolit and this Scout now shoots them very well.

Maryland still has ML season running and today I hit the "back 40" (actually around 5 acres) of my farm. Several does wandering around and a few of them must have been late births last year as they're ! small ! I waited and sure enough, an 8 pointer came sneaking in. I sent a maxi-ball and he dropped. Nothing special. No great hunter stories. Just a nice satisfaction of having made my ML into what I wanted and then having a chance to make it work.

Regards to all and best wishes for a happy new year.

I'll have to have my wife help me with the photo thing. I'll see if I can get one put up. Yep, that .54 sizzled right through. Full caliber entrance with a slightly larger exit. My accuracy load is my hunting load; 80 grains of triple seven, felt disc wad, wonder lubed maxi-ball.

Congratulations "725". You turned it into an excellent meat maker. Bob Hoyt is the "man" when it comes to boring out an old barrel and turning it into a new caliber. A while back I bought a T/C Renegade .56 caliber smooth bore and recently I had him rifle the bore to a 1-60" twist. I have pile of .540 round balls and some thicker patches that I need to try at the range. Again great job on making meat.

Yep, congratulations on a fine hunt. As mentioned Bobby Hoyt does very fine work. Have had him line a couple original 1861 Springfields and a 1860 Spencer.
Nicely done!

a 54 cal maxiball is a significant chunk of lead!
