View Full Version : Reloading pulled bullets

Specifically the ones here which I believe are pulled due to not being able to sell the entire round because they are military contracted:

https://americanreloading.com/22-caliber-222-227/630-223-50gr-brown-tip-frangible-1000ct.html

Has anyone had issues reloading pulled bullets like these? Also I’ve read that due to these being “longer than normal”, there is a need to use data for a larger grain bullet for this round to be optimal.

Plan on using it for target rounds only, not for competitions or anything. Hard to beat the price.

Don't expect the best accuracy from them, because the initial pulling tends to leave them somewhat banana-shaped.

I used to get thousands of pulled down USGI bullets from Jeff Bartlett in .30, and .50BMG.
Also factory seconds of 5.56 from Midway.

I didn't expect to win the Olympics with them, but never had a problem either.

I have shot thousands of pulled 30 cal. bullets too with decent accuracy, but never a frangible bullet. I would think that they would e good for paper punching and/or shooting VERY thin-skinned varmints.

I've bought and loaded large bulk packs of pulled/blem bullets. after close inspection, I could see nothing wrong with them until I began to weigh and sort them. I found as much as 10 grs difference in weights as I picked through them. This alone can make the lot pretty inconsistent or large groups. I would say to sort them into lots by weight before loading and then take it from there.

Consider:
223 caliber and 50 grain bullet
internal chamber pressure between 49,000 to 51,000 psi applied to the tail end of that little pill

Whatever "off round" they may appear from pulling will be round when swaged by that pressure through the steel barrel and beyond the muzzle. They will be fun to shoot and to test for accuracy.

I have shot a lot of pulled bullets. Each went bang and left a hole - mostly where I intended.

HAVE FUN...

I got 500 9mm HPs I'm loading . They have deep crimp marks for a jacketed bullet. Maybe that's why they got pulled. I've been trying to crimp into the same mark. For 500 Nosler HPs $39 to my door I'll deal with it. They'll go bang.

Unless you are a bench rest competitor, they should work very well for you.

I've loaded pulled bullets before with ok results. I don't expect really great accuracy with any military bullet, pulled or otherwise, but those should perform well enough for what you want.

I reloaded a variety of pulled .308 bullets in M1a and M1 Garand. Found accuracy with my reloads of them on par with MilSurp .308 and 30-06.

I have used pulled 647 grain .50 BMG API (Armored Piercing Incendiary) in my AR-50 over the last 10 years plus. At 1280 Yards I am able to get an 8 inch group with the mix. For these I run them through a sizing die to ensure uniform dimensions and remove "Pull Marks" (still have quite a few although they are drying up on the surplus market).

I would not hesitate to buy and load .308/7.65/50 pulled bullets when available.
