I was fortunate to get a nice sized doe at 60 yards on the last day of the season. Lyman 311041 out of my Marlin 30-30. Nothing to see here. Except...

She only has one ear! Never saw a one eared doe before. There was no hole for an ear canal, just a hard lump under the hide. I don't know if it was torn off by a coyote years ago, or she was hit by a car or what happened exactly. Anyone want to guess?

No ear... don't know

What do you call a deer without eyes...no eye deer

What do you call a deer with no legs and no eyes...still no eye deer

Well, actually our season ended on the 10th. I'm just finally getting around to posting pics. We've been slammed at work and I've been sick, so I'm slowly getting back to normal. Nice big doe though!

Bullet took her behind the left shoulder and exited in front of the right shoulder. Messed the lungs up. She ran about 20 yards then stumbled and fell down a hill. That was it. Heart was in perfect shape and made good chili!

Congratulations on a successful hunt. Did she drop quickly from that forward shoulder shot?

Like a lot of hunters I’ve shoe deer with about everything from 22-250/ 220 swift up thru 300 mag, 338 Mar MX. And the most with a 30/30. In its place it just plain works. But since I started with a Henry 45/70 with close to mouse fart cast loads, that is just plain cool.

Bullet went behind left shoulder and in front of right shoulder. If it had hit either one I'm sure she would have dropped on the spot.

Good shot on a dandy doe. Could be that she was born without the ear, only the rudiments of what didn't fully develop. One things for sure, she didn't hear but half of your shot. (Corny, I know)

Nice! Our holiday hunt started today though Jan 1st. Sounds like I'll be home on the 28th so I can hunt a few days. My guess a coyote. I had a few doe running around without tails a few years back. I watched a coyote one day biting a fawn in the rear while a it was in a circle of die and fawn with there heads facing out. The coyote kept circling them while mama doe head butted it a few times. The dirty coyote finally gave up and walked down by me. I stuck it with an arrow. I had a few fawn missing tails on camera that year. Had them on camera and walking by during bow season all grown up the following 2 years. They must-have been shot or moved on because I haven't seen them the last couple seasons.

Some other ideas on the ear could have been caused from frost bite, ripped, or shot off as well. Still leaning towards a rotten coyote.

I don't know. There was no hole you could stick your finger in. Totally closed over, and there was a hard lump underneath the hide so it had been healed over for some time.

A great way to end the season...( Van Dogh...that's funny)
it is a curiosity how she came to only have one ear, when we raised sheep we had a first time ewe with twin lambs. In her frenzy to clean them up she chewed off an ear on one of them( it healed up fine and looked very much the the ear on your doe..).... but then sheep are not the most intelligent members of God's creation.
Again congrats on a great last day of the season.

my guess is birth defect since there was no canal. Ripping off the pinna (ear flap) usually leaves some semblance of a canal. Seen coon dogs and pit bulls like that. congratulations on the harvest.
