Took the Cyber-punk 45-70 Marlin GSBL out hunting and grassed some tasty deer (and a fox for good measure.)

It had been very wet:

First sight of the Roe deer (in the triangle of green, across the small valley.):

Watched this (out of season) Roebuck while I waited for a chance to move on the doe:

Job done; she dropped where she stood:

The buck was inquisitive and circled back for a look (sadly out of season):

Gralloch done, I left her cooling and resumed the hunt. A second doe, fallow this time, presented a shot right on the edge of a water-logged copse. Despite good shot placement she dead-ran 5yds into the water.

My 45-70 load: 460gr Mjöllnir cast bullet:

Both bullets unsurprisingly exited on these comparatively small species of deer, as they have done with all deer I’ve shot with them. I really hope they don’t succeed in banning lead here in the UK, these bullets work so well in this rifle.

Might want to look into being able to cast in zinc ?? Just in case ?

T-Rex rated boollits for sure. You can take anything with that freight train. I, too, want to keep using this very effective projectiles. They just plain work.

Thanks for a great write up and pictures. We don't get a lot of hunting posts from across the pond and that's a shame. Very interesting.

Cool.
I thought I was the only one that hung them with the tail high like that.
If you feel the need, check into casting with Zinc. It's in the future for a lot of us.

Thanks for your write up. A couple years back, one of your countrymen in Hereford Shire told me about the calibers required to hunt those tiny roe deer and I couldn't believe what he wrote. One of the things that has been on my bucket list from time to time has always been to hunt those tiny deer. I am told they are very tasty.

They do make for good eating. Of the six deer species in the UK, there are actually two smaller: the muntjac (with its "fangs") and the Chinese Water deer (with its tusks!)

This reminds me of a movie quote, "Did you use enough dynamite there Butch?" Good shooting! I enjoyed the taste of the German Roe deer I shot years ago.
Thanks, Dinny

Great write up, congratulations. I used to cast both 425 and 465 for my guide gun, but had trouble getting clearance with the 465 (got the idea from a fine old schooler who loves his Ruger 3....seems I should be on the look for a single shot...always room for another 45-70!). Mind telling me your COAL and bore ride diameter on this one?
