It is now -41C or -41 F at the local airport right now.
Yesterday my 2011 Tundra (300,000 K) was a no start. I spent yesterday pulling the battery from my Tundra, warming it and charging it, and 5 hours with the engine block heater plugged in.
Thank goodness for fuel injection , it started and ran.
I do not mourn the end of carburetors, manual chokes, and automatic chokes, along with air preheaters in automobiles.

Here (56 Degrees North) Sunrise is at 9:21, sunset is at 4:15, Solar power is a joke this time of year
A fully charged Lithion ion booster battery that wil start a 60 HP diesel with a dead battery in June will drop to 50% charge just from sitting in the cold for 35 minutes. Once it is cold it doesn't have the amps to do more than run the built in LED.

It was 44F at 3am. It’ll be in the teens by lunch. No snow, though. Calling for 40mph gusts with saturated soil, hope we don’t have any blowdowns.

Big storm coming our way. No concerns.

25 gallons of diesel for the tractor with 74" blower for the drive and open areas
25 gallons of gas for sleds, chainsaw and snowblower for around the house.
700 gallons of propane. For back up heat and whole house generator
Moved 10 face cords of wood into the garage Wednesday and 6 more cords outside. (tractor is a blessing)
6 months of food
Back up 5000W gas generator and a small HF 900W. I will lend these out if need be.

More worried about some my neighbors; but they know I will help them out...have in the past...God willing.

I heat with wood, and brought in an extra cart-load (14 pieces) yesterday to hopefully get thru today. With my bum leg this is about all I can move... But, we have natural gas furnace back-up; city water; and a piloted (electricity not required) water heater. Sadly, I have but one tractor and each fall (done!) I take off the front end loader bucket, replacing it with a snow blade. Similarly, I put a rear blade on, too. Hence, albeit neighbors move firewood with their tractors, the ability to move the white stuff is greater.
What troubles me are the many folks who are "clueless" -- not even having a flashlight with fresh batteries. My own sister whined to me a month or so back that she lost power (a 100% electric house) and could not make coffee. I went on Amazon and bought/had shipped to her 308413a small Butane camping stove. Sometimes, it takes not too much to make conditions "better".
Re OP -- my heart is out to you re the cold. One thought I had was -- years back -- they sold electric battery warmers for vehicles. In addition to the block heater for engine (I have one in my tractor) it's a battery-sized pad installed under the battery, also plugged into a.c., and keeps the battery both warm enough to hopefully start the vehicle, but also keeping the electrolyte from freezing. When I lived up north, I recall several mornings when I took caps off battery cells to view what looked like snow-cone slush! When a battery is fully charged it may freeze at a quite low temp; but, as it discharges what was a sulfuric acid mix turns more to just water -- hence freezes at a higher temp.

Minus 3 degrees here this morning and 2-3 in of really crunchy snow. High of 10 degrees today. Hate cold weather. Cows have the hay rolls surrounded, ice on their backs, with the sun shinning.

Last winter we lost our furnace for almost four weeks due to an issue with our generator transfer box and stink bugs/ asian lady bugs. Was not fun especially when we had single digit weather. Luckily I had plenty of wood. I don't have that same cushion this year (foolish on my part) but should have enough backup systems. We have the 500 gallon propane tank for the generator but when the transfer box goes, that is a problem. Power has been up and down several times already with this cold and wind. I expect a lot of trees down which I will have to cut tomorrow to even get to the road 3/4 mile away.
Still wouldn't trade where I am at. Love it here. Merry Christmas folks and be safe and warm.

+9 degrees here this AM, small amount of snow maybe 8 or 9 inches total so far. Snow is how we get our water. Our old average for water from rain and snow averaged about 12 inches per year. It's been several years since we came anywhere near that amount. Five years ago we got 5 feet of snow over 3 days here in town. We used to get that kind of snow most years. Drove over the Cascade mountains last month and there was only about 6 inches of snow where there should be several feet. I've seen snow 12 feet deep at the summit in the past. I'm hoping we get a good dump of the white stuff because if we don't brushing our teeth may be a problem much less taking a shower.

It was 1º here this morning and should warm up to nearly 20. We only got a very small amount of snow he yesterday and hardly any accumulation.

Its hard to imaging the temps that 10X is experiencing. I've hunted in Canada in November several times when it was -15F. Thats cold enough to cause problems with an open coffee cup and oil on a firing pin!

On another note: 13 years ago I was working in Hazard Kentucky on an Ice Storm!

10F here in the hills west of Austin, bright clear sky. Combo of insulation, heat and moving water kept my well plumbing ice free. Yesterday, I plugged in my Jeep block heater and trickle charger, in case I get the call to man the ramparts. Charger tops off the battery (big AGM Odyssey) but also warms it. Block heater is a bit much for these conditions, but I like that it thins the oil a bit, making a first start easier.

Supposedly 1 deg. F here in Butler PA. When I was a kid in Southern California, the song Frosty the snowman didn't make any sense to me, and I had never seen a snow shovel.

Deer season continues after Christmas in this commonwealth, so I will at some point make a foray into the snowy woods to see if they are moving after the big snowfall.

It is -3 right now with -30 chill here in SE MI as I write this. My wife and I are blessed to be warm and secure and have no reason to go outdoors today. The wind is supposed to calm down by sometime tomorrow and we are going to spend Xmas Eve with a group of friends that has been together since the 1970’s.
I have a generator in case we lose power and two sources of heat and plenty of food and drink so this will not be a big inconvenience.
I do feel for the wildlife outdoors as it has to be tough on them. Yesterday I seen 5 pheasants behind my home in a bean field and that made my day as I knew there were a few around but to see 5 together and they were all cock birds was a treat.
Hope everyone else is doing well .

It is going to be 8 deg. here tonight. With the wind and saturated ground it's hard to say what will happen. As stated earlier it is not hard or really expensive to be prepared. A small propane heater and camp stove and a barrel of water will do wonders.

Years age we lost power if it even threatened to snow. Wood heat, camp stove, a couple lanterns and convince the kids we were camping out turned into an adventure. I still have a hook or two in the ceiling for lanterns. I would take the drawers out of the fridge and fill them with snow.

jomp, which end of NC do you live ? I"m in NW Alexander Co. Do you remember the Christmas of '83, if I remember correctly, got down to -2 deg. It doesn't happen to often but sooner or later it will.

-9 here this morning and about 2 feet of snow so it has warmed up quite a bit since Wed night (-34). Being prepared for this type weather is necessary in NW MT. I have a 500 series John Deere bucket/back hoe with 1 1/4 yd bucket if the snow gets really bad. Normally the Dodge Cummins with a Fisher plow and an 8hp snow blower will handle the snow at our house and the widows next door. We have a geothermal heat pump and two wood stoves for backup heat. I keep 100 gal of gas and 150 gal of diesel on hand for the cars, truck, generator and various other fuel powered equipment. Not sure on the food but I would guess a years + on staples. 13 acres (10 wooded) with free range livestock (deer and turkeys) and a garden.

That kind of cold would take some getting used to.

You never get used to it. You simply dress to cope with it. And you avoid situations where you may freeze to death.
And if you are travelling a remote back road, your vehicle quits and you do not have a back up plan that includes warm footware and warm clothes your lifespan is shortened to hours.
Cell service is non existent in most remote areas here and remote roads may have 1 - 2 vehicles a day. if that many.

In '51-'52 my Dad was stationed for 18 months at Adak, Alaska when it was just a radio intercept/listening post and gas station
for planes going back & forth from the US to Japan or Korea.

Taking turns of shifts between the Quonset hut radio room and the Flight Line were not his most favorite memories.

Here, it was -10 this morning, -5 now (9:30pm) some snow, fortunately no power or gas outage. Have the generator ready to go, gas for 4 days, plenty of wood for the fire place in case gas goes out, enough food for "a while" and gas stoves (and the grill on the deck...) with 6 propane tanks for cooking. Truck is filled up and hooked up to the block heater... Prepared, but not needed yet. All good in SW Ohio... Stay warm everybody!

Had -9 this morning, a little over 12" snow. Now it is up to 11F with warm up predicted. Supposed to be up to 32F by 8 am. I am glad I don't have to "go to work" in it any more, this retirement gig is pretty good. My driveway is 3/8 mile though so I get enough snow removal experience. Between the Honda Pioneer 500 with a 6 ft. blade and New Holland TC40 tractor with 7 ft. backblade I do OK. The part I enjoy the most is watching all the "transplants" decide that Idaho isn't so great a place to live and pack their bags to leave.

One thought I had was -- years back -- they sold electric battery warmers for vehicles.

I remember those as being not only a pad to sit on but some types wrapped around the sides of the battery or like a mini bag to set the battery in. Some were wired into the same line for the block heater so they both worked at the same time. I know that when I was a kid if you saw a car or pick up without a plug in the front you knew they were a flatlander and would need a boost every morning.

There were a lot of useful things back in the day we took for granted that have quietly vanished over the years, snow fence, tire chains, engine/battery heaters, coal ashes, department store lunch counters, service, and most of all...common sense. I'm sure the list could go on.

Yep - Have the same chore today (Christmas Eve) or tomorrow (Christmas). Too much snow on the house roofs; and although I have previously cleared the Outbuildings, they have to be done again. Lost a 3 sided Horse Barn/Shed 4 years ago because I did not get the snow off the roof.

Our chicken coop was 0 degrees around 4 this morning. How do I know that? All our smoke detectors decided to go off and got the dogs all upset. Then I noticed it was really cold in the house - 56 degrees. Yup, the new furnace decided it needed a vacation. Managed to reset it and 5 hours later with the fireplace going and two heaters (blocking off areas also) we are up to a balmy 62. Fun. Have to limp into the warm front expected around New Years.

And no matter how adverse a season

There are days that I can still remember
And I know that time will not erase
Memories of when we were together
Those should be with gratitude embraced

Those should be with gratitude embraced

Everything in nature has a reason
"Good" and "bad" do always interlace
Faithfulness and then heart-breaking treason
Should all be with gratitude embraced

And no matter what may come tomorrow
Even if it's loneliness you face
Boundless joys as well as bitter sorrows
Should all be with gratitude embraced
