I’m looking at casting some .358” bullets for an M&P 9. I was looking at the Lee universal expanding die and didn’t know if anybody had experience with it. I need to open the cases up in order to accommodate the larger dia bullet.

Lee just flairs the mouth of the case. It works but the Lyman "M" die is probably the best tool in my opinion.

Next is the Lee die, put the tapered plugs in the scrap metal bucket and order the correct size expander plugs from NOE. less expensive than the Lyman and can be set for pretty much any diameter boolit.

The NOE is more flexible, I just like Lyman better, I use both.

I’ll second. The above. It mirrors my opinion nearly exactly.

I posed this question before, but got the thread closed. I have two Smith revolvers with .454 throats so what diameter of the NOE expander plugs would I need for .4545 boolits in .45 AR? GF

The Universal Expander simply puts a " Flare" on the mouth and a lot of times this is all you need ... But ... sometimes when seating soft cast boolits you need more - like a Lyman M-Die that puts a two-step flare to seat cast lead and here is where you can simply buy a NOE Insert for the Lee Universal die body and Presto Chango ... you got a two-step neck expander at much less cost than a Lyman M-Die .
The NOE inserts come in every size you could want and beat buying a M-Die Seven Ways To Sunday ! Get the Lee Body / tool and the NOE inserts for your cast boolits ...
Be sure and get the correct sized inserts ... I always ask on the NOE Forum what size I need for a given sized boolit. Noe also sells the Lee Universal Die and their NOE custom inserts .

Posting questions on the NOE site Forum is the best way to get a proper answer ... the owner Al Nelson will usually answer your questions . www.noebulletmolds.com

I use an old 310 expander, in an adapter to 7/8 threads, on 38SPL wadcutters.. otherwise, M-Dies.

Does NOE make powder thru expanders or just the expander it's self?
