Hello all. I'm looking for suggestions for a good deer and hog hunting load for the 170 gr. Lee bullet. They're coated and checked, some preliminary shooting gave o.k. accuracy. I have bl-c2, varget, H4895, and WC845. The rifle is a Winn. 94 SCR. Thanks, and have a great day.

i would think H4895 is a good place to start.

Alloy is 50/50 clip on, and stick on.

This is what I would do also and let the gun tell me what it likes and then go from there .

I've always preferred 3031 for the 30/30, but since you don't seem to have any, I'd have to agree with H4895.

Thanks everyone for the advice. Components are very difficult to get in this part of Canada, so I'm stuck for now with what I have on hand.

Try 28 gr of your H4895.

I use 29gr of H4895 for my 30/30 marlin. Didn't find varget to work very well. 170 & 185gr PCd cast.

Lyman shows 27 grs to start with BLC-2 for 170 gr jacketed bullet. About 1600 fps so fine for cast one would think. I'd use a magnum primer with ball powder.
IME, the 30-30 ain't that picky about powder. You might find that you can use all of those that you have.

I used both 3031 and H4895. An ole friend of mine back East used 4198 and 170 gr…he had some nice deer to his credit.

A Remington Model 8 in .30 Remington arrived today, just as I was doing a batch of PC and GC Lee 170s. They came out at 179 grains for me, all up. I have H4895 on hand and will work with it if the bullets will load to a COAL that fits — and will see if they feed. Looks to me like a very useful boolit.

I recently picked up a Marlin 336 in 30/30. Had some Lyman 31141 cast up lubed with Ben’s Red. Loaded them up with 26 grains of IMR 4895. Had to shorten the OAL to 2.547 to get them to chamber, but boy I like ‘em! I haven’t shot open sights for over ten years, so it took a couple of shots to get centered. Then the next seven went inside the 2” bull at fifty yards. I was happy!

I tried to attach the pic of the target, but my ‘putter wouldn’t cooperate.

Abert Rim, the Lee bullet always worked great in my Model 8, but I always sized to .309. I use 26 grains of 3031, shot so well I never even tried another powder. You will really enjoy that rifle.

Gewehr-Guy, that’s good to hear. No 3031 at hand right now, but I will try the H-4895. And I did size them to .309.

I’ve added another powder to the long list of suitable powders for the 30-30 and the Lee 170gr.
Accurate 2015. 25 grs of it is looking good.https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20230508/0fefa63d3cad24b4b9373eea88c04368.jpg

Love that .30-30 bolt gun.

Thanks!
Me too.
It hasn’t seen the inside of the safe- ever- because it stays in my shop with the magazine loaded, ready to go.

Somewhere between 27 and 30 grains of Varget should give you a very good load. I wish I had some more on hand.

I have had decent results with leverevolution and red dot.

Very timely post. I just finished prepping a hundred cases to set up and FF in my 30-30 AI Contender.

Lucky for me, I have everything that has been listed here so it should run rather smoothly. Nice thing about the FF loads is they are usually very accurate, so if need be I'll be able to hunt with them as well.

Speaking to the Model 8, my oldest grandson has been working on a load for an heirloom Model 81 in 300 Savage circa '48-49. So far just some J loads for it to see how she ran.

Thanks to all who responded.
