OK I have finished the AR15 rifle

But I got to thinking
For plinking and range work
I have 20 , 30 and some 40 round mags

For groundhog hunting
I figure a 10 round mag is more than enough and 5 round mags would work great

What 5 or 10 round mags would you suggest ?

I was thinking about the Pro Mag 5 or 10 round flush fit mags
As then non of the mag would be sticking out of the mag well

But the #1 thing I am looking for
Is a mag that works 100% of the time
Without having to worry about it

Thanks
John

Through the years with the AR the Colt 20 round is my Favorite I try to pick one up when ever I at Sportsman Wearhouse even the colt 30 rounders are reliable and worth the money and are keepers
I have some Thermolds from the 80's that have also been reliable .

20 round magazines will clear the bench on any reasonable rest. But if'n you gotta, Magpul 10 round magazines are as reliable as AR magazines get.

Stay away from ProMag in my experience. Magpul or PSA mags are my go to.

My GI 20 rounders have never failed me. I have a 30 rounder to look "rambo" should the need arise, but 10 and 20 rounders serve me very well on the range and in the woods.

I met this Rifle in the Navy in 1971, all we had were 20 rounders.
Still prefer those. Have 20, 30 & 10 rounders. Mostly MagPul in the 30 rounders.
I use the MagPul 10 rounders at the range.
Never, ever had a problem with MagPul.

Brownell's 20 round magazines have been working well with junior shooters shooting HPSR with the AR platform. This is for standing, sitting and prone positions.

AR Stoner mags work great for me, I mainly use the 10 round one, they are metal.

The ten round Magpul is perfect for general use. I have several. The twenty round metal Colt or Brownells mags are great as well. I only use the 30 rounders( Magpul and USGI) for the castle defense AR rifle and pistol.

I prefer Magpul 20 round magazines. I've never had one fail to feed and they don't stick down too much so you can shoot from a bench rest.

Just stay with the 20 rounders. Just because it holds 20 doesn't mean you have to fill it.

Is a 5 round even made for a AR ? It took a while to find a 5 round that fit my M1A.

It would have to be a longer body blocked to 5 rounds. 10s are pretty much flush with the mag well.

5 round magazines are required for hunting with the AR in Michigan. I use Magpul 10 rd with the Magpul adapter that limits it to 5 round capacity(a replacement follower with long legs). Magpuls have functioned flawlessly for me.

Magpul PMAG. Absolutely and without a doubt.

No, just don't. Seriously, to be perfectly blunt, Promag is garbage and you'll waste your money.

Magpul...

So this is what you want...
Get a couple of these 10 round PMAGs (https://magpul.com/pmag-10-ar-m4-gen-m3.html?mp_global_color=118)
And a pack of these -5 limiters (https://magpul.com/minus5roundlimiter-pmaggenm35-56x45-3pack.html?mp_global_color=118)

Bada boom bada bing, Bob's your uncle.

Hey John, the ar-stoner 10's from midway have been flawless for me. Promag is garbage, at least in my experience.

A few years ago I got a killer deal on some S&W makes 5 round AR mags - they are made med 5.56/300blk/204 Ruger . Very good mags - CDNN had them for $8.99 a few years ago. And as mentioned above they are required for hunting in MI.

Magpul PMAG. Tough, dependable. These synthetic mags are smooth and slick, and the cartridges just seem to glide out them when feeding.

I like the basic 20 round mags for general all round use and hunting. 10 rounders are nice and perfect for bench shooting, no overhang when bagging the rifle.

The 30 rounders would be good for shooting drones out of the air......if the need ever arises!!!:target_smiley:

I do like the short 10 round mag for hunting. Mine are clear which are nice and I believe they are Eagle. I only have two and have used them quite a bit over several years with perfect satisfaction. Magpul makes great stuff though.

maybe this should be a poll question. ive gotten all kinds from Vietnam era bought as "surplus" to promag, stoner, some Korean knockoffs sold by widners long long ago and others I dont remember brand names for but the ones I like the best are magpul with the clear sight window and clip on dust covers. too bad 6.8 won't work with the magpul plastic dimensions.

I use steel magazines in 20 and mostly 30 rounders. Replace the follower with a Magpul follower. Haven't had any fail.
