So, I fell into a sizable quantity of H870 powder. Powder is good and fresh. I have some ideas on what chambering to build a rifle on, but what do you all recommend? I have enough powder to burn through a couple barrels, depending on the boiler room to bore ratio. ; )

Hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving!!

A quick internet search seems to favor the 30-378. Cast or jacketed?

Cast or j-words. I'm good with either/or. My slate is clean for options.

The good'ol 7mm Rem Mag seemed to love H870 with 160gr+ jacketed. It's high on the list of options.

Any good for a 50 BMG? I’d be tempted if I had an appropriate range…

7mm or .300 RUM or the already mentioned 30-378 Weatherby- but I once used a case full of H870 for 160gr RN bullets in 6.5 Swede- it shot as well as anything else.

I have a pile of 6.5 Swede's. Will play with it a bit in one of those. Good idea.

Will do some research on the RUM's too. Leaning to the 7mm Rem because I have a pile of 154+gr jacketed bullets.

Thanks.

My 7mm Rem Mag loves it almost a compacted load. 139 gr to 160 gr bullets sub moa at 100 to 300 yds. I don't shoot farther then that so no guess beyond.

77gr H870 162gr Hornday SST - 2995 fps

My 300 WBY mag not so much.

My favorite load with the 7mm Mag. os a 162 gr. Hornady over a stiff charge of 870!

It should work well with any of the belted mags.

25-06. When I was in Grad School I had one - that was 40 years ago. Was at the range shooting it and a guy came up to me and asked if I had used any H870? I said No. He said, "You ought to, that stuff burns all the way to the target!"

I used it in my 264 win mag with 140 grain bullets. 73 grains IIRC. Need to chrono that one

Check out the loads in the 30-06 section for WC872 and WC860. I have used these with AA870 with the same results.

But if I build a rocket engine it's all gone in one launch.

True but it will be something you remember for a long time.

Wish I still had a lot of it. Down to a couple pounds. I used it heavy in 30/378 180 jacketed loads

Any of the RUM cases as previously stated, 338 or 300 Lapua, 300 Jarrett, I think 7STW?, and as stated before they use Retumbo for 25-06 so why not H870, according to Richard Lee the big Weatherby cases, 264 winchester. And the list goes on and on, but they had fewer magnum powders back then so they may have been using in cartridges that it was not that good of a fit for. I reallt like it in my Jarrettand the early days of the 300rum but it was gone and i was disappointed.
