Yesterday I spotted a skunk by the front yard fence. I grabbed the 20 gauge sxs with #6 Alcan shells and let it have it from the right barrel( IC). The skunk folded up. As it was still raining, I thought I'd wait to haul it off.
About a half hour later, I went out the back door headed to my shop. I glanced off to the front, and there was another skunk.
So I went to the shop and grabbed my 44-40 with 200gr FN cast, turned the FF3 sight on and dropped that skunk.
Again.
Turns out that the original skunk played possum apparently.....
My wife said that it didn't release musk;
Good thing because I couldn't smell it if it did.
I'm glad that it didn't charge[emoji16]

TBG you have been under siege for a while. Glad you have enough artillery to stave then off until you fight your way to a better piece of artillery. This could have been a very stinky mess but you handled it well.

a 36grm once n quarter of #2 or #3 lead is always a better option...#6 is almost dove shot..well it is dove shot and borderline for close ducks or rabbits... larger shot just works better and for some weird reason the size #3 seems to pattern well in most guns....I seem to recall you lot are one size different to what we call it... untill we both get to #BB there is only one size between that and #3 for us so I guess its your lots #2????

An instant demise is best skunk medicine, never wound one. I usually shoot a skunk through the shoulders. I had to shoot three one time digging under the side of my barn. What they say about buzzards is true, they eat dead skunks.

Back when I was a kid--long time ago--I knew a couple of other kids who had them de-scented, and they did make good pets. However, being buddies didn't stop them from eating the chicken's eggs.

I've known a couple guys who had pet skunks that were 'fixed'. They were pretty cool.
Sort of like a cat without the attitude.
I've wanted one myself, but our dogs ain't having it.

I remember back in the 70’s we had a possum in the house. I got it with my carp spear and tossed the thing outside still harpooned. Headed to town. Came home 20 min later and it was dragging my 20’ spear across the yard! A quick follow up with the BB gun finished it. If it didn’t spray I would’ve skinned that thing out. I don’t see too many skunk pelts… they’re pretty cool! I saw three running up the road last week and another in the middle of the road a day later. I made sure to swerve so my truck didn’t get sprayed. Guessing they are active because it must be skunk rut???

Thank God we don’t have Skunks here. We have every other type of weasel though, and they are all stinky!!!! Good thing that 44-40 was fully loaded, might have had to call for an artillery strike… :bigsmyl2: good shootin as always Thomas!!!!

Our oldest brother would escort us 4 younger kids to the swimming hole in the back forty. I still vividly remember meeting up with a large "Polecat" as Granddad called them. This one was huge with dirty looking fur and acting aggressive. Jim gathered up a tree branch about baseball bat size and the battle began.
Every time Jim landed a blow, the skunk sprayed him. This went on for a minute until the skunk succumbed to pecan limb trauma.
We kept a considerable distance away from big brother( around 12 years old at the time) the rest of the day[emoji16]

I remember back in the 70’s we had a possum in the house.

My Dad was sort of on the absent minded/lazy side of some things. He'd never make extra work for himself.
One thing he did was leave the stair set open that went into the garage attic, as well as the garage door.

He came home one night, and as the headlights swung into the garage, he saw a possum run up the stairs.
He knew there was no way to go up in there and get it.
So he figured he'd just close the stairs, wait until he thought it got hungry, then open them again so it'd run out.

It didn't quite work out like that----
Later that evening, he was watching TV when the possum dug a hole in his living room ceiling, and dropped down.
Business really picked up when he now had to get it out of the house.........

Have to be careful here in WV during archery season walking to or from the stand in the dark. The skunks have the "right of way" and they ain't giving it up!:shock:

When one comes toward me, I used to think they were somewhere between aggressive and fearless.
Later on, I learned they aren't blind, but have very poor vision.
