Hi All,
I'm not on here too often anymore due to health issues for this 70 plus year old caster/shooter. I've harvested 40 deer with calibers ranging from .357 Magnum handgun up to .35 Whelen. My all time favorite is the .358 Win which has accounted for 20 of those 40 deer. I've not harvested a deer with a cast boolit to date. My all time favorite cast boolit shooter is one of my four .32 Win Specials (2 Win 94's and 2 Marlin 336SC's) My 1957 manufactured Marlin 336SC (with ballard rifling by the way) is my all time favorite. I have a Leupold VXI 2x7x33 mounted on it and I really like that rig. I shoot the RCBS 08-170 boolit at 182 grains checked and lubed. I've shot mostly 16 grains of 2400 at 1650 fps. My top load to date has been 38 grains of LVR sparked by a CCI .250 primer @ 2280 fps. I've shot all manner of small game, pests, and varmints with the 16 grain load of 2400. Would that 182 grain cast load at 2280 fps be adequate for our Pennsylvania Whitetail deer? It has a Brinell hardness of 13 and I get no leading what so ever at either speed.
Thanks in advance,
358 Win (aka Bob)

I don't know about the Pennsylvania deer, but it would kill any whitetail in Mississippi.
Happy hunting.

That load would put down anything that that walks in Pennsylvania with proper placement through the chest cavity!

Have a safe, successful hunt!:-D

The 2400 load would put down deer, let alone the LVR load! I just took a doe with an NOE hollow point in 30-30 over 6.5 grains of Red Dot. I doubt that load hits 1300fps but its accurate and deadly!

Hi All,
The reason for the dumb question is I'm red, green, brown, and blue color blind. I'm a decent shot with handguns and rifles but can't track game worth a hoot due my color blindness. Of the forty deer taken so far, only three did not fall at the shot whether standing or running full out. I may as well mention to all of you that I can't hit the side of a barn with an open choke shotgun even when standing inside the barn. I have to be without doubt, the worst shotgun shot ever put on earth.

That would certainly be my choice. Absolutely no doubt it would be very effective.
