Howdy folks,
yesterday I grabbed an antique rusty mold. Nothing fancy, but it casts a bullet I've never seen.
Does any one know this design? Diameter is .412"

Don't know what it is, but I could have fun playing with that in my 41 magnums.

How much does it weigh? I'd expect to see it in a 40-65 Winchester or one of the Ballards.

I've seen pictures of very similar ones found at US Civil war battlefields.

My first guess is Maynard

Can you show us the mould?

It weighs 288 grains in pure lead.
It does look like the Maynard bullet; but it's hard to believe that it should have made its way to here... that being said, when I was a kid, I had a friend who had found a 1873 Saa wreck in a well... why not a Maynard mold.
And what if it was a 10,4 Vetterli?

looks European, Veterlis were all rim fire I think, so no reloading

I think this is one of the variations of the "compression" bullets, popular in the mid 1850s in France, Beligum etc.

Wow, that's in really nice condition. We've all seen hundreds of moulds that were absolutely abused by their owners. Really disheartening. That one has been taken real good care of.

I really like the external design. Never seen anything similar.
Great find!

Thank you all for your comments.
I found it with another pretty mould which cast a 319" and 250 grains tapered bullet, paper patch style.
Here are pics for pleasure.

Greetings Bouteselle. That first one was definitely not Maynard… I have that mould, and the one shown here is nothing like those bullets and the mould is nothing like that mould. That second bullet looks like it may have been intended for the fine old practice of Schuetzen. Those folks liked to shoot what was essentially equivalent to the American 32-40, IIRC, it was an 8.15X??. Those must be European moulds as the sprue cutters are completely different from any that are seen here.
Just a thought… I bet my 40-40 Maynard would love that first bullet!

Perhaps a portuguese 8X60R Guedes?

Too bad we’re so far away! I’m also interested in a lot of things in your area!

I've been to Europe several times (mostly Hungary and Slovakia) and have unfortunately had very little opportunity to connect with shooters there. A great treat I had was seeing a major museum display of Schuetzen targets, guns, and accoutrements while visiting Brno, CZ and while out in the country I got to drop in on a Trap Shoot. Those folks make a great social event of that kind of event. What kind of shooting is most popular there in the South of France?

I'm 47 years old, and I've been shooting all my life. I started with black powder, it's the only thing I really like, and I've seen almost everything in shooting sports...
It's sad to say, it became miserable. Black powder is no longer in fashion, the only thing young people like is 9mm, ARs and AKs... Firing 50 cartridges in two minutes is not shooting. They don't know anything, they're not interested in anything, and it got very complicated with the losers who govern us... They invent something new every three months to annoy people.
We’ve had better days.
When I'm in a black powder contest there are practically only old people... Twenty years from now it'll be over.

8.15 x 46R. You can make them from 30-30 IIRC
