Taylor's & Co. Baby Rolling Block Carbine .357 Magnum

Looking for the good/bad or ugly on these guns. I noticed Taylor's has 4 of them in stock as of now (11-5-22). Have looked at them in the past but never went further because none could be found at the time.

The gun would be in 357 mag. Is there a way to mount tang sights? Do they shoot well? Most of the time would be shot from a bench. Might be used for deer hunting once in a while.

These are Uberti's version of the Remington #2 Sporting rifle. I collect original #2s and have thought about getting one myself. I was at the Virginia Gun Collector Association show yesterday and saw a Uberti in .22. It was a nice looking rifle. It was not drilled and tapped for a tang sight, so you would need to do that yourself.

The upper tang of these rifles is slightly curved. The tang sight base needs to be curved to match. Both Lyman and Marvel made them back in the day. They are quite scarce today. The good news is MVA makes a little curved adapter that allows their tang sight to be properly mounted. Good luck, keep us posted if you get it.

The "baby" rolling block is the Remington #2 sporting rifle clone. It is very different from the full size Pedersoli.

Keep the comments coming. I am looking at the baby, in old age we revert to being weak.

I do have a full sized 1885 falling block, weight and recoil are working against me now.

Quite correct. They do specifically call it "baby". I would like to have one of those as well, neat little 5lb rifle.

A friend of mine had one and discovered they wont do well with hot .357 loads. His began to loosen up as his hot loads did their thing to the cross pins. I think if someone keeps loads mild they'll last forever.

I was surprised to see back when they were making those lightweight rolling blocks that they had them chambered in 45-70 ! I would not want to shoot one of those.
I had one in 22 lr and it seemed very well suited for that cartridge but I didn’t care for all the brass on it so I sold it.

I agree, keep the loads mild. I've seen a couple of these chambered in .45-70! That seems crazy. If nothing else, it would be brutal on the shoulder. Here is one.

.44-40 was largest cartridge Remington ever chambered the original #2 sporting rifles in. There were very few of those. I have a Remington #2 originally chambered in .44 rimfire, now converted to centerfire. I've shot it quite a bit. That cartridge is a little shorter than a .44-40 and has a slightly lower velocity. It's still a potent short range cartridge. Granted the modern Uberti's have much better quality steel, but I would not want anything to do with one in .45-70.

Let's get back to the gun in 357 mag. well not even mag.

Load will be 357 brass, 3.5 gr. trail boss powder, with a Lee 125 grain boolit lubed with LLA twice. Same load I use in all my 357's. I do have a load I use for deer but only shoot 10 or so a year.

Chuck, That load would be a powder puff. You wouldn’t have to worry about the gun with that loading.

The action can have a tang sight, just need to bend the tang sight to match the curve of the upper tank and have a long screw with a nut to hold the hammer spring.

John is correct. He had to do that with the Marble's sight he put on my original No.2. Mine is in .32S&W long. I loaded to 1,000 fps or so to keep it quiet.

Hmm, interesting thread. If I weren't armpit deep in Stevens projects, I could fancy one of these #2 Remington copies. Nice size for a .32-20, doncha think?

Yes. I have an original #2 rifle in .32-20. Its a great combination.

Well after trying to buy one, I find out that they have been discontinued. Saved me some money. The Peds (look to be same gun) are always back ordered. My heart is broken.

From what I gather their web site has been abandoned. The fellow stated they have a new site going up in a few weeks and were not able to make any changes in the current site.
