View Full Version : Tell me about my impulse purchase, Sako Forester L579, in 308

My local shop had one if these on consignment. I bought it absent any knowledge of the model. I’m aware of prior owner though, and

I broke one of my cardinal rules; I bought a used gun with no scratches or visible wear & tear. I learned at some point along the way that if a gun shoots straight and runs well, it will get used and accordingly, scratched up.

But, I’m lacking a 308 at the moment, so... things happen.

What say ye folk of castboolits; you guys know more than google. Tell me things about my new old rifle.

My guns shoot straight, have been shot a lot, and aren't all scratched up.
But then again, I don't just throw them in the truck,
or toss them up on a concrete shooting bench that doesn't have a towel on it either.

Look at the bolt face, edges of the locking lugs, and the rifling inside the barrel. It may not have been shot much at all.
There's a lot of weapons out there like that. Most rifles haven't been shot more than a few boxes of factory ammo.
That's why I've never had much of a problem buying used ones that look decent.

The L579 is my favorite of the Sako actions. Browning used them for a while in the 60's and early 70's

I've had the Browning round top version for 40years with no problems at all. It was a .308, I had it rebarreled to .250 Savage 35 years ago and gave it to my new wife.
She's kept both of us!

I think that SAKO's are the finest factory rifles in the world. Every single one of the ones that I own have had great triggers and are very accurate right out of the box!

You have zero self control skills. Some had to say it. Welcome to the club of gun guys.

I’m usually far more reserved. I think my last see-it/buy-it was early 90’s.

Twist rate?

I haven’t physically checked my copy, but the internet says mine is 1:10

I can read the obvious, it’s a Burris, it’s 3.5x10x50. It’s a second focal plane scope with three stadia lines (presumably 200, 300, & 400 yards BDC marks). Other than that, I got nothing.

I was hoping to locate the model so I could lookup the parallax distance, and get the actual subtension for the marks.

Can you tell from just that picture what model that is?

Edited to add: I think it’s this one: https://www.midwayusa.com/product/1009517329

Chuck, if they ever made a bad Sako, it must have never left the factory. You have done well my friend. BTW....you have just asked for validation from the nation of impulse buyers.

You might want to actually measure the twist rate. One I worked with many years back had a 12" twist. Appears SAKO went with Winchester's specification of the 12" twist when Winchester named the military cartridge as "308 Winchester". Belgian made Browning 308Ws also had the 12" twist as did their 30-06s back then.

Internet postings say both 10 and 12" twists. I'd measure it were it mine hoping for the 12" twist.

it was one of the most famous rifle here in NZ... very very very popular among the last of the deer cullers and the meat hunters accurate and smooth handling...read any of Philip Holdens books and you will see his .243 mentioned with much love.in semi decent condition, they sell for similar money if not more than a new Tikka T3....

It is a nice scope, but with the capability of that rifle depending on your use you are definitely going to want more magnification. That thing is very capable of reaching out and touching something. I have one in .243 .

Current use scenario, nothing over 150 yards. And trying to keep warm.
