Wish I would have made that perfect shot, but 160 yards offhand with open sights and I made a bit of an error. She did take a finisher to the neck at about ten yards, but she left a blood trail you could find by feel and wasn't going very far.

You know, it happens, 160 is a long way off hand for me. But she dropped and is now in the cooler so I can't complain much.

Hope it's ok to add a few that are not cast. GF got her WT with a 30-30 Win 94 (150grn Interlock at 2400fps) and then cheated and got a mulie doe at 130 with her 7mm-08 shooting the 154 Interlock at 2900ish fps. I also took a female antelope earlier in the year with an AR in .223 wild and a 75grn Gold Dot at about 2600fps and 200 yards.

Clean venison heart, marinade in buttermilk overnight. Dice and roll in salted flower and brown. Use 1/2 cup red wine to deglaze pan and then simmer in beef bone broth for 2 hours. Saute mushrooms and garlic in pan, add to broth and heart mixture, saute onions and garlic and do same. Cook 3 cups egg noodles till tender and add to mix. Thicken the sauce, add sour cream to taste, salt, pepper, garlic , and a touch of rosemary.

Just for fun, my 4x4 mulie buck from last year. Henry single shot .357 mag and a lee .358/158GC tumble lubed and air cooled at about 1500fps. First shot was 109 yards and got both lungs, as he didn't drop but I knew he was hit I reloaded and took a second shot. He had walked a few steps so was at 120 yards and I heart shot him.

Almost got my WT doe this AM. Sat down and 15 seconds later a WT jumped into the clearing 50 yards away but was facing away from me. I watched it for about 20 seconds then a HUGE female doe crossed the clearing at a full run and the one I was watching followed suit. Had she been facing any other direction than dead away, I would have had another one in the freezer.

I'm shooting 24.0grns of H4198 with a 255grn clip on WW bullet, around 260grns as cast, air cooled. I don't size and tumble in a mixture of LLA and mineral spirits. I don't tend to be too careful on the mix of LLA/spirits when it's looking thick I add spirits, when it's looking thin I add another tube of LLA. I have yet to see any leading, and I have no idea how it performs on game because I've never recovered one.

Well, this morning, the deer were not quite so smart. I sat down in one of my favorite spots, and it being Sat. hunters were driving up and down the roads trying to shoot deer out of their trucks. I have hunted this spot for years and watched deer lay down when a truck hits the cattle grate at the front of the road, and stand up again when they hit the cattle grate leaving. Most hug a large rock face or deep cover and can't be seen from the road. People usually get a fawn or two on one side, and a few mulies on the other (and the deer mostly stay to their side of the road as one side follows a river *white tail* and the other goes to some badlands, I have seen WT venture to the wrong side of the tracks, but never the mulies). After about 930, trucks stopped coming and things were not moving so I decided to go explore instead of sit. I know of a porcupine that lives in a rock crevice that's been there for years and I always say good morning. So I walked over to the cliff and said good morning to my porcupine friend. About 30 yards away was a good sized doe not paying attention to our conversation. She was quartering slightly away and about 30 feet down so I lined up a few ribs back and centered aiming for the heart at a downward angle. The shot broke and she took off. Got down and found blood where I hit her and a decent trail for about 50 yards. Jumped 6 deer on my way to her and noticed none limping so I figured she went down close by. Found her under some trees and on inspection broke 2 ribs going in, hit the onside lung, destroyed the heart and exited the bottom of her chest. 255grn bullet as before in the 38-55 Win High Wall. I may have to bring the 357, that's way too much gun and sight for 30 yard shooting. :)

Let me know how it goes. I've been a cook in the military for 24 years, and cook in my civilian job as well. I'm not great but I'm decent. And if it goes over well I may share more of my recipes. I think you will. They just shoot and if you ever recover a bullet I want to know. I'm not pushing anything crazy and I can't keep one in a deer. I'm just melting WWs and rolling them in LLA, I imagine someone who is taking care can do far better...and I'm having success.

And last but not least, 6.5CM, Mosberg Patriot Revere. 367 yards, 2 shots low chest. 140grn Hornady interlock at about 2800fps.
Sat up on a hill and called and the fork made came running from about 500 yards out and stopped at a ranged 367 broadside. I shoot at 300 regularly with this gun/load and had a good rest and trusted the reticle as it's held true for me over a lot of shots. Figured 67 more yards wouldn't add too much difficulty. First shot low in the chest and he started looking pretty hard hit. But he looked hard hit broadside so I hit him low in the chest a second time and dropped him. Nothing special, but a typical tall Montana fork mulie. The view was amazing. The 2 mile drag was BRUTAL!

In the prairies with windchill and hoar frost it can get brutal. Deer are easy to locate just look for steam coming out of the willows where they are bedded. When you push these patches the deer stand up and look at you as if to say ,"you can't be serious hunting in this weather". On such a hunt a buddy got his first deer with his then new Win 94 Big bore .375 First shot the barrel turned white ,second shot it glazed with ice and the shots sounded like pops no bang.In the tight willows you can actually smell the mulies or elk. For that 2 mile bare ground deer drag get a game cart with wheels or bone it where it dropped. It would be bald dragged that far........i did the same 40 years and three hernias ago.

That was a two mile drag, up and down coolies, some of the places I hunt, a game cart doesn't have enough room to travel. We really were not expecting to get anything or we would have brought backpacks to haul out the meat and head. I've hunted in some cold stuff where the deer had frost on their eyelashes and honestly looked like they were not all that upset with the idea of being shot. I carry a lot of open sighted guns or my AR with an M68 because you can shoot them with the snow flying sideways and caked on your sights (with the M68, you can take it off fast and go to opens or just keep the lens cover on and you can still see the red dot on the deer).

My son's grandpa gave him his dad's old Marlin, so my boy now has a well-cared for, well-hunted rifle from his great Grandpa, a Yooper of Arcadian stock. Great shooten! Love the cast bullets! Made a mistake last year and loaded lynotype bullets in my 50-70 Sharps. Shot the buck through the chest. Never seemed to bother him. Reloaded and shot him again! He ran about 30 yards and fell over. The bullets were 2" apart. Got no expansion. Dummy me! Now I cast em pure and soft with molly grease and beeswax. Still eatin venison! Great photo!

I have taken 4 does over the last couple of years with my 38-55. Lee 379-250-rfn cast from air cooled COWW. But only traveling at around 1,400 fps. No boolits yet to be recovered. This on was angling towards me at 75 yards. Shot entered just behind the left shoulder and exited way back in the right side rib cage just enough to not get into the guts. 307909

Recipe #2. Purchase a savory pie crust at your local grocery store, or make your own if inclined (I just buy mine, crust is easy to mess up and lard is a must) Cut up all the calf muscles and any other tough meat into stew meat. Roll meat in a combination of flour, garlic powder, salt, pepper, onion powder, and maybe just a bit of rosemary. Make sure there's a good enough amount of seasoning to coat everything. I generally do 1.5lbs of stew meat, a half cup of flouer, a quarter cup of garlic and onion powder, 2 teaspoons of rosemary and 1 teaspoon of salt and 2 teaspoons of pepper. Put enough oil in a high sided skillet to just cover the bottom, get the oil hot enough to get a glossy surface and add a bit of butter. Brown meat. While meat is browning, chop onions and saute with meat. (I like a cast iron skillet or something that will get a few cooked on bits. Deglaze pan with a half cup of red wine. Reduce heat to a simmer and add stock (either bone broth or water and whatever base you choose (beef, onion, garlic etc). Cut up carrots, turnip, celery, parsnips, potatoes, mushrooms and whatever other firm root veggies you happen to like. Roast in pan with garlic and olive oil till they get a bit of color on them and add to mixture. Simmer all until veggies are just undercooked but tender, you want just a little too much firmness. Add peas/corn now if desired, peas/corn cooks fast and you don't want them mush add salt to taste at this point. If you had enough flour in your mix that the filling naturally thickens add to pie crust and bake till crust is golden brown. If filling is not thick enough, mix flower and alive oil together for a rue and add slowly until thickened. Then add to crust and bake. Serve with your favorite shredded cheese or sour cream on top. Game pot pie. Note, this also works with game birds, squirrel, rabbit etc.

All the great success photo's with 38-55 Winchester cast boolits now has me dragging my old Marlin 1893 out of the safe. It is an octagonal barreled rifle with a sharp bright bore. Only problem is I slugged the bore and it is .380" ! Lyman doesn't offer a .382 sizer. My cast boolits come out of my Lyman mould at .379. That's not big enough! So found some Clover brand valve grinding compound to spin lap the mould out .003". My .379" sizer will have to be annealed and opened up to .382" Good time to start as rifle season in PA is over. Hope to be ready by November 2024 season.

I got an H&R 1871 in .38-55. Lyman 375449 boolits were tumbling at 50 yards. Ended up going to the Lyman 380681 mould. Mine drop at .380 using 50-50 Wheel weights and pure lead. Lube with Orange magic. 28.0 gr of IMR 3031 seems to do the trick. Need to take it hunting this year.

An alternative to dragging deer when it's too rough to use a cart is one of the plastic sleds. Use mine a lot. Slides over rocks logs, stumps, etc. Also keeps all the dirt, leaves grass out of the cavity.
