What's your thoughts on this bullet for deer hunting. Bhn is 8. Plus I have some lee swc with gas checks. Of the two, which do you think is better for my 357 ,6 inch revolver. Maybe only 50/60 yards. Thanks...

How far from the target do you have to be , to be unable to place 3 shots inside the mouth of a coffee cup? No props.

50 yards is easy. What's up with the coffee cup stuff. How about a tea cup???

I would say coffee cup, not much on holding out my pinky at tea time.

P.S Flat nose bullet. 158 gr or heavier.

158 RNs would be great on cats, but for deer, I would like a large meplat, 180 grs. at least.

Is it the RF, with a flat nose? if so it should work just fine. That’s a good looking bullet.

The 158 GC bullet is the best choice and a good choice. I suggest a 16-1 alloy. Start at 12 gr of 2400 and work up to 14 gr of Alliant 2400.

I use a 16-1 alloy cast 358156 (160 gr w/GC) over 14 gr 2400 in Winchester cases using WSP primers for 1350 fps out of my Ruger 6" security Six. It is accurate does quite well on deer and other game out to your 50/60 yards range. It's my standard magnum load for that revolver.

I would stay away from the round nose bullet if it were me.

Ive often thought the Lee 158 round nose flat point would be a good hunting bullet. It has a large meplat for the caliber. Ive never gotten it to produce loads that duplicate the accuracy Ive seen with the 358156 or the keith bullet. Good luck!

For big game you want to use a boolit with a flat point . Round nose don't have the shocking effect or cut clean holes that SWC does . Read some Elmer Keith and Skeeter Skelton writings .
Go with the 158 gr. SWC with the gas check installed and drive it as hard as accuracy will allow . Put the first shot in the vitals ... or pass ... the 357 is rather marginal so aim well and make the first shot count !

I thought he was talking about the 158 RF, which is practically a WFN. Looking back, it seems like he may have meant the regular round nose, which I wouldnt want for anything but possibly small game.
