Hey gents, i have a 1978 Winny 94 that needs a new hammer spring. Serial number is 480014x, so it's in that range where they switched to the coil hammer spring but still used the half cock hammer. The original spring is 2-5/8 long by 3\8 OD, but I suspect it is supposed to be a bit longer. My rifle just needs a little more umph to consistently set off primers. The Winchester part number is 4594x, but its discontinued. Anybody know of an aftermarket spring that would work? I've found a few that look promising from industrial suppliers. Wolff sells a variety pack of compression springs that might have the right one.

You should be able to get that spring from one of the parts dealers like Numrich Gun Parts Corp. Wolff is also a possibility, and I'd phone them and explain to them what I need. Sometimes one can find a needed spring, pin, or screw at a comprehensive hardware store, especially of you have the old one to compare. Also, try Brownell's.

You could also try Homestead Gun Parts.

Thanks gents. I sent messages to Wolff and Brownell's, hopefully they will get back to me soon. Really like this rifle otherwise, it rolled off the line the same year I did (1978) but shows alot less wear!

I wasn't able to find the longer spring for my M94AE, hopefully you will and post the info here. However, I cured the ignition problem with mine by making a 1/8" thick washer to fit over the hammer strut under the bottom end of the mainspring.

Take the spring and the hammer strut to an engineering supply place - should be able to get one in a little plastic bag that works (and will be a whole lot cheaper than gun supply places) - might need to cut to length is all - not hard to do.

Brownell's sell springs. You get a bag of springs of all different sizes and then cut them to length.

I also have a 94 AE and it had light strikes. Ordered a new spring from MGW and it was longer than the original, seems to have solved the problem.

I looked and the spring assortments I saw don't contain any that are the proper OD. Hopefully Brownells will get back to me soon and offer a solution

No different than saying Chevy instead of Chevrolet.

Thanks. I have some extra springs for the 94AE, I guess I could cut one to fit if nothing else turns up. MGW shows the spring I need as discontinued

Both Brownell's and Wolff got back to me and both said they did not have one that would work. Kind of disappointed in Wolff, since this is their business after all. Anyway, if the 94 AE spring doesn't work I'm going to explore options for hardware springs. There is a place called The Spring Store which has a huge variety of compression springs with specs listed on their site.

Thanks. I saw that one and it appears to be a rebounding hammer spring, which I already have a couple. I'll contact them to make sure though.

I found the original spring for my 94 AE, which lengthwise is halfway between the original top eject spring and the current replacement 94 AE spring. It fits the top eject just fine, so I installed it and popped some primed cases. They all went bang and the indentations look better to my eyes, so mebbe I've got this figured out.

Sorry I didn't respond earlier. The current replacement 94 AE hammer spring was like 1/2" longer than the original on my 1987 model, I got it from MGW:

Put a box of shells through the 94 yesterday and they all went bang just fine. Primer indentations look good to me so I guess she is fixed. I have a few trays of Remington 9-1/2 large rifle primers laying around so I thought I would use them for practice loads. Loaded them into brass freshly trimmed with primer pockets cleaned out and the Lee C309-170-RF. Firing them from my 1985 94AE, 2 out of 20 rounds required a second strike to fire. This rifle has a new and stronger hammer spring in it and seems to set off Federal and Winchester primers just fine. The 9-1/2 is apparently a magnum primer, even though Remington doesn't write it on the box. Are these known to be harder than non-magnum primers? Of course, I have spun a long yarn here about hard Remington pistol primers over the years.
