Ok last Saturday was the opening of the Ohio Lake Erie Zone
But I had to pass on hunting till Monday as I had migraines
A friend and I hunted this morning at the marsh we are members of
In a marsh area along the Packer Creel , only a few miles from Ottawa National Refuge
Great thing , we can drive to within 200 yards of his blind and his blind is 100 yards off the dike in 8" of water
He had the decoys in the blind to put out
But we still got to the blind almost 2 hours before shooting time
I took 2 shotguns
As I hate switching shells if the Canada geese come in
I had 2 Rem 870's Express
One had 3" #1 steel for geese
The other had 2 3/4" 1 1/4 oz #6 or #4 Bismuth shot I made
Federal Gold Medal hulls
Longshot Powder
Rem RP wads
Listed as 1350 FPS
We put out 12 Mallard decoys in front of us and 24 floating Canada Goose decoys were off to the down wind side of the blind
Then the hour wait till shooting time
When our watches told us it was time
We stood up and flushed the couple of ducks that were in the decoys
2 Mallards and a Shoveler
Maybe 5 min later a group of wood ducks made a pass and we both got 2
A little later 2 more single wood ducks came in and we harvested both
About 9 a flock of 15 or so Green Wing Teal decoyed and we harvested 3
We saw 1 flock of geese fly over us , but they were 200+ yards up and not interested in joining the decoys
At about 10:30 we picked up the decoys and headed to the Barn
The Barn is a barn where we keep the tractors
But it is also where we sign in and out
Clean our birds
I also like to check who is seeing and harvesting ducks
As we can hunt any of the blinds if not claimed 1 hour before shooting time
Also we tend to do a little BS'ing there after hunting
The single Wood Duck I got was a perfect looking Male Wood Duck
As I had won a duck mount at a wild game dinner
I decided to put it on the wall
So I washed off the blood
I will drop it off to be mounted in a few days
