I found a nice load from published Winchester load data from 1997 for 38 Spl +P 158 gr LSWC using 7.1 grs W540 ( which is HS-6) with 17,300 psi. Looks like a nice load to use in my S&W Heavy Duty.

Hodgdon doesn’t list HS-6 for a 158 gr lead bullet except in 357 Magnum which yields a much lower pressure rating due to longer case I would surmise.

My S&W Heavy Duty and Ruger Blackhawk should easily accommodate this 38 Special +P load using 7.0 grs HS-6 and a 158 gr LSWC. I’ve seen this 7.0 grs HS-6 load mentioned on other sites and I’m just wondering if any members here have any experience with it or have any comments for its use in my revolvers just noted. Winchester 17,300 psi rating is well within +P specs…

Appreciate your comments.

The Lyman 48th Ed'n reloading manual lists 6.7/HS-6/160 gr. LRN as max., but reported a pressure of 16,200 c.u.p. The velocity reported was 901 f/s, from a 4" unvented barrel.
Your load sounds like it's definitely in +P territory, but certainly nothing that a heavy-frame .38 Spl. or a .357 Mag. revolver would have a problem with.
