have a chance at both cartridges, same aprox date of manufacture.I had wondered which would be the prefered choice as far as load and feeding? I had heard that bigger faces like the 30/40 were easier on the bolt face, but wondered how often the rim of the top cart would jump behind the rim below it and bugger the feeding. So if you had to choose

I have used both and prefer the 30-40 from a good barrel. Many of the 30-03s were used with the more common 30-06 loads and suffer from headspace problems, as did the 30-06 chambered 1895.

The rimmed case takes a little getting used to when loading to prevent the condition you describe but it is no big deal. Somewhere, I have a pictorial on loading the magazine, when I find it I will post it.

You will be hard put to get rims tangled with the 1895 and you will find that the gun feeds a wide variety of cartridge lengths and styles without a hitch.

To load:
Press a cartridge base first onto the magazine follower just where the rear lips are cut away.

Lay the cartridge down into the magazine and slide it to the rear.

Repeat until full.

It is not aggrivating like the SMLE and works so smoothly you wish for a 10 round mag.

30-40. Don't worry about the rim. Like Dan and Strawhat said, just load the magazine properly. Both of my enfields (.303 and 45-70) function well if I stuff the mags the right way. Proof is in the Bren LMG, box magazine fed .303, arguably one of the best light machine guns ever made.

Given equal bores and condition.... 30-40, easy choice. The capability of the 03/06 in the Win 95 exceeds the capability of the gun. The 30-40 provides plenty in the 30 cal choices. The 405 and 35 WCFs provide for "bigger" without exceeding the bolt thrust/pressure capability of the gun.

Good afternoon
30-40 ! I like the LONG neck ! And as mentioned above the case holds plenty of powder for cast use. A 240 grainer at 1900 > 2000 FPS will thump any critter I will ever see.
Mike God Bless you.

I agree, the long neck is a major positive. I load the 311299 to 1700fps and it is great.
