When I lived in Alaska a lady I knew made these every fall before the ground froze. She would dig a hole, build a fire (Fir), and get er ripping for awhile, she would take a shovel full of coals out and leave the rest in the hole, place her pot of beans on the coals, and place the shovel of coals on top of the pot...then bury it all for several hours.

Besides the fact that they were DELICIOUS, that is all I know.

Anybody know a recipe, and cook time, etc. ?

Seems that would work for any baked bean recipe.

ETA: This link says you line the pit with rocks and the time would be about 16 hours.

There is a church in my neighborhood that does Bean Hole Beans for the Harvest Supper. The chef(?) cooks them in galvanized trash pails.

Even Bean Hole beans can be ruined.
Our Grange suppers would draw a crowd from all over, because of the Beans. The "old boy" would make as many as 3 pots (about 10 gals.). There was never any left overs.
Then the "old boy" had a heart attack. He recovered nicely, thank God, but from then on the beans were never the same. We finally realized that cooking them in the "bean hole" had NOTHING to do with the flavor. It's ALL in the recipe, remove the lard, reduce the salt and molasses, make it "Healthful" and 'Screw 'em up".

The beans do get a smoked flavor from the pit. Thats part of why they were so dang good.
