I asked Tom at Accurate Mold to upsize the John Kort 43-215C mold to 45 caliber, which makes for a nice shape in lever actions and doubles as a black powder slug. It’s sort of a middle ground between a full Keith style and the old factory round nose. Here is the link:

For just general shooting and practice, the Lyman 454190.

For hunting, the RCBS 45-270SAA, or a reasonable facsimile thereof-

My 25-5 and 625-3 really like it with Accurate #5 powder.

255SWC and 300WFN. I used Lee molds but just about any would work.

If I were to buy one today it would be the MP 45 275gn HP.

My 45 Colts [excluding a Contender barrel used for pressure testing] are used just for fun shooting. They are all Uberti's; a M1873 Winchester, an Artillery SAA and an Evil Roy SAA.

Since i shoot them for fun I figured I didn't really need to sling 250 - 300 gr of lead down range with each shot. When I hunt with a revolver, I use the 32 H&R, 357, 41 and 44 magnums with appropriate magnum loads for the job at hand. Therefore, for fun use in my 45 Colts I decided to try the Lee 452-200-RF. The 6 cavity mould drops them in rapid fashion at .254 cast of most any scrap range lead alloy. I load them over Bullseye or 700X to 1200 fps in the rifle. The same load is 950 fps out of the revolvers and is quite accurate in all 3 guns. Measured psi runs right at 14,000 psi. The revolver's fixed sights have been regulated for the group to hit just above POI at 25 yards. The adjustments on the rifle's leaf rear sight allow for accurate shooting to 200 yards. All three are way more fun than a guy should be allowed to have.

If I ever have to use them in an SD situation, I have full faith and confidence the 45 cal 200 gr RF bullet at 950 or 1200 fps will git er done......

Machine the nose to full groove diameter, load it backwards as a hollow point wadcutter and neither watermelons or armadillos will ever run away.

I like the 454424, started with single cavity Lyman from 1968, loaned out(lost). Still my favorite 45 Colt bullet, commercial cast or the Lee 452-252-SWC. I do intend to find another 454424 clone, just hasn't hit top priority.

RCBS 45-270-SAA
Had this for lots of years. My only complaint is it casts too big. .454"+
I had Tom at Accurate cut one to drop bullets at .451"
Perfect to PC then size. Great bullet design.

In my Uberty 7 1/2" SAA I like and use the Ideal/Lyman 454-190 over a load of Red Dot. It just soots very well that that bullet and load that I use and I also lean towards the traditional RNFP boolit.

In my Uberti 1858 Remingtons with conversion cylinders - I use the Lee 452-200 RNFP with either BP or a Red Dot load - using the Lyman CB Handbook data and keeping them around 700 fps due to the conversion cylinder. Fun lots to shoot and I see no reason to push the limits..

Should add that I usually use soft lead if I have it or if not, range lead - tumble lube for smokeless loads and finger lube with my BP lube for the BP cartridges.

454190 sized to .454 and 9 grains unique if very accurate in all my colt SAAs, New frontier, New Service and anaconda revolvers. Also it has enough neck tension that I can load 10 in the tube of my Uberti replica Burgess and fire away without the bullets pushing in.

Say, can I borrow that mold--should make a great heavy boolit mold for my 25 ACP's!:kidding:

For the record, I like the RCBS 45-230 CM, but there are really too many good'uns to choose from for me to be dogmatic about it.

Favorite .45 Colt bullet = Lyman # 454190 Rnd FN. It shoots as accurately as the Lyman Keith inspired 454424 in my 7-1/2" bbl'd SAA & a Ruger NV with a 4-5/8" tube. Groups run ~2-3" at 25 yds if I'm having a good 'eyes' day. The load is 8.0 gr of modern Unique and I size to 0.454".

Lyman's 452460 or the H&G #68 actually group a bit better, but print 3" lower than the 454190 bullet. Too much trouble to hold over. Best regards, Rod

I aquired a 235gr RNFP group buy mold that casts 1/2 WW/1/2 lead at .453 and they weigh 240gr with that alloy. Shoots to POA with the New Vaquero's fixed sights at ~900fps.

The Lee 452-255 RNFP also does very well with 38gr of 3f, compressed, with a card wad and Emmert's lube, but it's a lot of buck and roar.

Yeahbub- I believe I have the same mold . I purchased for my .45acp . The bullet feeds just fine but will not chamber reliably. I think the ogive is too long for the chamber . Mine is an unmarked Lee 6 cavity .Do you have a mold or bullet number as I need to sell mine and get a bullet that will fit my pistol. Yours is the only reference I have found on this bullet .

RCBS 45-255-SWC and 8.5-9.0 gr of Unigue.

Runs about 900 fps, out of My Ruger NM Vaquero with 4 5/8" barrel.

RCBS 45-270-SAA hands down is my favorite. From 700 fps out of a revolver, all the way up to .454 Casull levels out of a Rossi carbine, it's accurate and hits hard on game.

I use an original H&G Keith Type SWC thats in the 250 grain weight range. I've also cast the same bullet in a RCBS mold. These are shot in either revolvers or Contenders. The SWC bullet may not feed in a lever action rifle.
