another Justin Wilson video just popped up on my YouTube. I just had to watch. now I got to get to a store this week and get some green peppers and shrimp to go along with the onion, celery, crushed tomatoes and andouille I got last week. still haven't decided if it will be a big pot of my tried and true jambalaya or if I might try to make étouffée . those old videos of Wilson sure do create an appetite

It was all exerts from comedy performances from as far back as the 40s.
Justin Wilson was on sometimes as was Amos & Andy, the Bickersons when Don Amichie was young, etc.

I remember he'd sometimes start off with, "I knew a guy what lived in Bunkie, Louisiana,,,,,".
I always thought it was all made up.
Then several years ago, I was driving to New Orleans, and sure enough, there was an exit for Bunkie.

I have ancestors from Bunkie. I own about 2 1/2 % of about 600 acres in Bunkie inherited from my ancestors. Most years I get about $300 from the field rentals, but got 10K from a timber sale, and 12k from an oil lease. Hope they drill and hit soon. There was a well on it back in the 30's.

When the Berlin wall fell, oil companies bought up a bunch of those Hind Russian helicopters
to use for shuttles to the off shore rigs, and the ones out in the swamps.
At one time the oil companies were flying more of them than the Russian military.

My wife and I were living in Wisconsin at the time, which was about 1980 or so, when we got call that my wifes dad had to have heart surgery. He was living in New Oleans at the time. We just got done watching Wison fry a whole turkey in a huge pot of oil. We thought it was a joke, we had never hear such a thing. We got to New Oleans and in the hospital going up in the elevator to see Dad, two nurses in the elevator with us started talking about Justin's cooking the turkey. My wife turned and whispered in my ear "It was REAL". I could barely keep from laughing out loud!

We just got done watching Wison fry a whole turkey in a huge pot of oil.

That's be about the time everybody started calling those propane burner things a turkey fryer.

Right behind that came recipes for 'turduckens'. A turkey with a duck crammed up inside it.
Then, people started stuffing a chicken inside the duck too.

Back to the oil industry connection down there:

for some big shot company meeting down there in that neighborhood.

Heck I got recipes form him! His cooking was down to earth home cooking. No impossible to find ingredients, no micro green salads that are the size of a table spoon in the center of a massive plate... good ole home style food! Flour tarpaulins! LOL

He might have been the inspiration for, and pioneered ebonics with things like:
"Let me tell you whata I'm a gonna did"..

One of his stand up routines we'd hear on the radio was about two fellas that kept selling
a white mule back and forth and raising the price each time until one of them sold it to someone else.
His buddy got mad and told him 'we were both making good money selling that mule'.

Another on a raffle for a mule. They sold a bunch of tickets, and before the drawing- the mule died.
But they held the drawing anyway.
Someone asked if giving away a dead mule made everybody mad.
He said, "One fella was pretty mad, so they gave him his dollar back".

A quick search on the shelf I keep my favorite cookbooks on turned up Justin Wilson's very first cookbook . Wearing a white Linen jacket and wearing a red bow tie (like Col. Sanders of KFC ) and dark hair slicked back with a little dab'll do you brylcreem ... there he was
"The Justin Wilson Cookbook" ...this was his very first , in 1965 and in 65 it sold for $8.95 which at the time was pretty pricey !
I'm going to look through it and see if there are any interesting recipe's or stories from the mid 60's .
