Scrap Yard Lead

I stopped at a scrap yard yesterday to get rid of some steel.
Since I was already there I decided to check to see if they had some lead.

$1.50 a pound. So I bought $42 worth. 28 pounds.

Someone has been making a lot of ingots around here.

I melted down the Lyman labeled ingots and made some test boolits. 24 hours later they are Saeco 6 / 9 bhn.

Good for you. My local recycler will not sell lead to the public.

We are visiting Mcminnville TN, and i noticed a scrap yard on the edge of town. May check it out for lead before we drive back to MN. Loving being in a non nanny state! Visited Lookout Mountain National Monument above Chattanooga yesterday, quite imprssive.

Those "Selby" ingots are most likely factory cast pure lead ingots. A little pricy at $1.50 a pound, for some areas, but clean ingots are very nice to have and no wasted fuel to clean and cast into ingots. Always a good idea to check the lead bins since you are already there anyway. Good job.

I checked out the "Selby" ingots.
Some people consider them antiques. Definitely pure lead. I might sell them on eBay.

For that price, I would open my wallet and get all I could afford! Clean, ready to cast? Oh, yeah.
Couple years ago, I bought close to 400 pounds for a buck a pound. In ingots, ready to cast, bhn of 9-10. From a small salvage yard in Eastern Texas. And, some Linotype ingots for a buck a pound. Yard man says,” it’s lead, ain’t it?” Yessir,it sure is! Just my opinion, but, you know how opinions are. Worth what ya pay for them.

None of the yards around here will sell to the public either. They won't even let you look around when you're there selling something.

same here , yard just up the road , dropped stuff off and she says oh we dont sell to the public

Check your local business/tax office. A retail tax certificate is less than $10 a year. Then you are not public.

And you are wide open to IRS audits!!!! Ask me how I know! I had a business for many years and I closed the business but held onto the license in case I ever wanted to open up again. The closure was on record at the IRS but they were constantly hounding me with " You have a tax stamp so you must be using it". I finally got tired of it and turned it in. Just not worth the hassle for the little bit you may gain. That yard will report all your purchases to the IRS as part of there normal business so then you have to claim that on your taxes.

I'm always leery of other people's lead at the scrapyard. You never know if it's other people's mistakes. If your making fishing stuff than no big deal unless it clogs the pouring spout. I buy the foundry stuff if the price is right. Ebay is questionable for composition and most times is crazy priced and I need mine more than somebody else.

I bought 1200 + pounds a year ago .75 cents a pound - I never buy ingots or someones melt period .

I used to carry an eye dropper bottle of muratic acid in case I found some lead like that. I never really used it as I would buy sorted WWs for
$0.35/lb and it was not worth the money since there was so little loss in the wheel weights.

Same here.. ours will buy but not sell.
