When I got my .38 Super(s), brass for them were unobtainium. Starline had .38 TJ brass available, but no .38 Super. I sent a query as to whether the load data or function (.38 TJ has different dimensions at key points) might be different between the two. My query was answered by a Sterling individual named Hunter Pilant, who sent me 20 of the .38 TJ for free, with an entreaty to try them out.
After too long an interval, I managed to locate reloads, pistols, and other required "linearly aligned aquatic fowl" in the same place (gun range) at the same time, and fired the 20 reloads through the chronograph. All 20 functioned without and fired without a hitch (a testament to the brass as much as to my reloading competence), and displayed normative primer signs.
The exact number crunching awaits, but it looks like 5.2/BE-86/147 gr. TC-PC gives ~1060 + 35 f/s, which is a touch mild for my purposes, but is a step in the right direction. The max load, 5.7/BE-86/147 gr. JHP gives 1140 f/s from a 5" barrel, which is a bit more like it. The slightly smaller capacity of the TJ case and the higher lubricity of the TC-PC projectiles may be enough to boost the muzzle velocity over 1150 f/s, which is what we're looking for.
BE-86 MAY be a bit fast-burning for best velocities in .38 Super, so the hunt is on for Blue Dot or AA#7. Until then, any input from .38 Super shooters who have used BE-86 would be appreciated.
